John 13

CSB 1 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. NIV 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. CSB 2 Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Him. NIV 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. CSB 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, that He had come from God, and that He was going back to God. NIV 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; CSB 4 So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself. NIV 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. CSB 5 Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him. NIV 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. CSB 6 He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?" NIV 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" CSB 7 Jesus answered him, "What I'm doing you don't understand now, but afterwards you will know." NIV 7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." CSB 8 "You will never wash my feet-ever!" Peter said. Jesus replied, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with Me." NIV 8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." CSB 9 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head." NIV 9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" CSB 10 "One who has bathed," Jesus told him, "doesn't need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you." NIV 10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." CSB 11 For He knew who would betray Him. This is why He said, "You are not all clean." NIV 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. CSB 12 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to them, "Do you know what I have done for you? NIV 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. CSB 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am. NIV 13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. CSB 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. NIV 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. CSB 15 For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you. NIV 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. CSB 16 "I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. NIV 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. CSB 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. NIV 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. CSB 18 I'm not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats My bread has raised his heel against Me. NIV 18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' CSB 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am [He]. NIV 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. CSB 20 I assure you: The one who receives whomever I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me." NIV 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." CSB 21 When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit and testified, "I assure you: One of you will betray Me!" NIV 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." CSB 22 The disciples started looking at one another-uncertain which one He was speaking about. NIV 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. CSB 23 One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. NIV 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. CSB 24 Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was He was talking about. NIV 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." CSB 25 So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, "Lord, who is it?" NIV 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?" CSB 26 Jesus replied, "He's the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it." When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son. NIV 26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. CSB 27 After [Judas ate] the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, "What you're doing, do quickly." NIV 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, CSB 28 None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this. NIV 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. CSB 29 Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or that he should give something to the poor. NIV 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. CSB 30 After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night. NIV 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night. CSB 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. NIV 31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. CSB 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once. NIV 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. CSB 33 "Children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, 'Where I am going you cannot come,' so now I tell you. NIV 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. CSB 34 "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. NIV 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. CSB 35 By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." NIV 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." CSB 36 "Lord," Simon Peter said to Him, "where are You going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later." NIV 36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." CSB 37 "Lord," Peter asked, "why can't I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You!" NIV 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." CSB 38 Jesus replied, "Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times. NIV 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
