John 16

NKJV 1 "These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. NIV 1 "All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. NKJV 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. NKJV 3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. NKJV 4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. NKJV 5 "But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?' NIV 5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' NKJV 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. NIV 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. NKJV 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. NIV 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. NKJV 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: NIV 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: NKJV 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; NIV 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; NKJV 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; NIV 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; NKJV 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. NIV 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. NKJV 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. NIV 12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. NKJV 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. NKJV 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. NIV 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. NKJV 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. NKJV 16 "A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father." NIV 16 "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." NKJV 17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, "What is this that He says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?" NIV 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" NKJV 18 They said therefore, "What is this that He says, 'A little while'? We do not know what He is saying." NIV 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." NKJV 19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, "Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? NKJV 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. NIV 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. NKJV 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. NKJV 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. NKJV 23 And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. NKJV 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. NKJV 25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. NIV 25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. NKJV 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. NKJV 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. NKJV 28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." NKJV 29 His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! NIV 29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. NKJV 30 Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." NKJV 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? NIV 31 "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. NKJV 32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. NIV 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. NKJV 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." NIV 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
