LEB 1 So then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. NIV 1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. LEB 2 And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed [it] on his head, and put a purple robe on him, NIV 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe LEB 3 and were coming up to him and saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" and were giving him slaps in the face. NIV 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face. LEB 4 And Pilate came outside again and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing him outside to you, so that you will know that I find no basis for an accusation against him." NIV 4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." LEB 5 Then Jesus came outside wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and he said to them, "Behold the man!" NIV 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!" LEB 6 So when they saw him, the chief priests and the officers shouted, saying, "Crucify! Crucify!" Pilate said to them, "You take him and crucify [him]! For I do not find a basis for an accusation against him." NIV 6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him." LEB 7 The Jews replied to him, "We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself out to be the Son of God!" NIV 7 The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God." LEB 8 So when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid, NIV 8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, LEB 9 and he entered into the governor's residence again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus did not give him an answer. NIV 9 and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. LEB 10 So Pilate said to him, "Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?" NIV 10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" LEB 11 Jesus replied to him, "You would not have any authority over me unless it was given to you from above. For this [reason] the one who handed me over to you has greater sin." NIV 11 Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." LEB 12 From this [point on] Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews shouted, saying, "If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar! Everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!" NIV 12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." LEB 13 So Pilate, [when he] heard these words, brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in the place called The Stone Pavement (but Gabbatha in Aramaic). NIV 13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). LEB 14 (Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, "Behold your king!" NIV 14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. LEB 15 Then those shouted, "Away [with him]! Away [with him]! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests replied, "We do not have a king except Caesar!" NIV 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. LEB 16 So then he handed him over to them in order that he could be crucified. NIV 16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. LEB 17 and carrying for himself the cross, he went out to the [place] called The Place of a Skull (which is called Golgotha in Aramaic), NIV 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). LEB 18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, {one on each side}, and Jesus in the middle. NIV 18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others--one on each side and Jesus in the middle. LEB 19 And Pilate also wrote a notice and placed [it] on the cross, and it was written: "Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews." NIV 19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. LEB 20 So many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. And it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, [and] in Greek. NIV 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. LEB 21 Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The king of the Jews,' but, 'He said, I am king of the Jews.'" NIV 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews." LEB 22 Pilate replied, "What I have written, I have written." NIV 22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." LEB 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothing and made four shares--for each soldier a share--and the tunic. (Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top {in a single piece}.) NIV 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. LEB 24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it apart, but cast lots for it, [to see] whose it will be," so that the scripture would be fulfilled that says, "They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots."<note: A quotation from Ps 22:18> Thus the soldiers did these [things]. NIV 24 "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." So this is what the soldiers did. LEB 25 Now his mother and the sister of his mother, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene were standing near the cross of Jesus. NIV 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. LEB 26 So Jesus, seeing [his] mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, said to [his] mother, "Woman, behold your son!" NIV 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," LEB 27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own [home]. NIV 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. LEB 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that now at last everything was completed, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty." NIV 28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." LEB 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there, so [they] put a sponge full of the sour wine on a [branch of] hyssop [and] brought [it] to his mouth. NIV 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. LEB 30 Then when he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, "It is completed," and bowing [his] head, he gave up [his] spirit. NIV 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. LEB 31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and they could be taken away. NIV 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. LEB 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. NIV 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. LEB 33 But [when they] came to Jesus, after they saw he was already dead, they did not break his legs. NIV 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. LEB 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. NIV 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. LEB 35 And the one who has seen [it] has testified, and his testimony is true, and that person knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. NIV 35 The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. LEB 36 For these [things] happened in order that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not a bone of his will be broken." NIV 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," LEB 37 And again another scripture says, "They will look on [the one] whom they have pierced." NIV 37 and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced." LEB 38 And after these [things], Joseph [who was] from Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but a secret one for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate allowed [it], so he came and took away his body. NIV 38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away. LEB 39 And Nicodemus--the one who had come to him formerly at night--also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes [weighing] about a hundred pounds. NIV 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. LEB 40 So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in [strips of] linen cloth with the fragrant spices, as is the Jews' custom to prepare for burial. NIV 40 Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. LEB 41 Now [there] was a garden at the place where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was yet buried. NIV 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. LEB 42 So there, on account of the day of preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was close by, they buried Jesus. NIV 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
