John 20

BBE 1 Now on the first day of the week, very early, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the place and saw that the stone had been taken away from it. NIV 1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. BBE 2 Then she went running to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple who was loved by Jesus, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the place of the dead and we have no knowledge where they have put him. NIV 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" BBE 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out to the place of the dead. NIV 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. BBE 4 They went running together, and the other disciple got in front of Peter and came first to the hole in the rock; NIV 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. BBE 5 And looking in, he saw the linen bands on the earth; but he did not go in, NIV 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. BBE 6 Then Simon Peter came after him and went into the hole in the rock; and he saw the linen bands on the earth, NIV 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, BBE 7 And the cloth, which had been round his head, not with the linen bands but rolled up in a place by itself. NIV 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. BBE 8 Then the other disciple who came there first went in; and he saw and belief came to him. NIV 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. BBE 9 For at that time they had no knowledge that the Writings said that he would have to come again from the dead. NIV 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) BBE 10 So then the disciples went away again to their houses. NIV 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes, BBE 11 But Mary was still there outside the hole in the rock, weeping; and while she was weeping and looking into the hole, NIV 11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb BBE 12 She saw two angels in white seated where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head and the other at the feet. NIV 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. BBE 13 They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I have no knowledge where they have put him. NIV 13 They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" "They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." BBE 14 And then looking round, she saw Jesus there, but had no idea that it was Jesus. NIV 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. BBE 15 Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? who are you looking for? She, taking him for the gardener, said to him, Sir, if you have taken him away from here, say where you have put him and I will take him away. NIV 15 "Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him." BBE 16 Jesus said to her, Mary! Turning, she said to him in Hebrew, Rabboni! (which is to say, Master). NIV 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher). BBE 17 Jesus said to her, Do not put your hand on me, for I have not gone up to the Father: but go to my brothers and say to them, I go up to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. NIV 17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' " BBE 18 Mary Magdalene went with the news to the disciples, and said she had seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her. NIV 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her. BBE 19 At evening on that day, the first day of the week, when, for fear of the Jews, the doors were shut where the disciples were, Jesus came among them and said to them, May peace be with you! NIV 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" BBE 20 And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. NIV 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. BBE 21 And Jesus said to them again, May peace be with you! As the Father sent me, even so I now send you. NIV 21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." BBE 22 And when he had said this, breathing on them, he said to them, Let the Holy Spirit come on you: NIV 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. BBE 23 Any to whom you give forgiveness, will be made free from their sins; and any from whom you keep back forgiveness, will still be in their sins. NIV 23 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." BBE 24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, named Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. NIV 24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. BBE 25 So the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, If I do not see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails, and if I do not put my hand into his side, I will never have belief. NIV 25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." BBE 26 And after eight days, his disciples were again in the house and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were shut, Jesus came, and taking his place in the middle of them, he said, May peace be with you! NIV 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" BBE 27 Then he said to Thomas, Put out your finger, and see my hands; and put your hand here into my side: and be no longer in doubt but have belief. NIV 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." BBE 28 And Thomas said in answer, My Lord and my God! NIV 28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" BBE 29 Jesus said to him, Because you have seen me you have belief: a blessing will be on those who have belief though they have not seen me! NIV 29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." BBE 30 A number of other signs Jesus did before his disciples which are not recorded in this book: NIV 30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. BBE 31 But these are recorded, so that you may have faith that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so that, having this faith you may have life in his name. NIV 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
