John 21

CEB 1 Later, Jesus himself appeared again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. This is how it happened: NIV 1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: CEB 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus ), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee's sons, and two other disciples were together. NIV 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. CEB 3 Simon Peter told them, "I'm going fishing." They said, "We'll go with you." They set out in a boat, but throughout the night they caught nothing. NIV 3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. CEB 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples didn't realize it was Jesus. NIV 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. CEB 5 Jesus called to them, "Children, have you caught anything to eat?" They answered him, "No." NIV 5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. CEB 6 He said, "Cast your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." So they did, and there were so many fish that they couldn't haul in the net. NIV 6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. CEB 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard it was the Lord, he wrapped his coat around himself (for he was naked) and jumped into the water. NIV 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. CEB 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they weren't far from shore, only about one hundred yards. NIV 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. CEB 9 When they landed, they saw a fire there, with fish on it, and some bread. NIV 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. CEB 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you've just caught." NIV 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." CEB 11 Simon Peter got up and pulled the net to shore. It was full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three of them. Yet the net hadn't torn, even with so many fish. NIV 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. CEB 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples could bring themselves to ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. NIV 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. CEB 13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. NIV 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. CEB 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. NIV 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. CEB 15 When they finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" Simon replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." NIV 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." CEB 16 Jesus asked a second time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Simon replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus said to him, "Take care of my sheep." NIV 16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." CEB 17 He asked a third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was sad that Jesus asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" He replied, "Lord, you know everything; you know I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. NIV 17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. CEB 18 I assure you that when you were younger you tied your own belt and walked around wherever you wanted. When you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and another will tie your belt and lead you where you don't want to go." NIV 18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." CEB 19 He said this to show the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus said to Peter, "Follow me." NIV 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!" CEB 20 Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. This was the one who had leaned against Jesus at the meal and asked him, "Lord, who is going to betray you?" NIV 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") CEB 21 When Peter saw this disciple, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?" NIV 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" CEB 22 Jesus replied, "If I want him to remain until I come, what difference does that make to you? You must follow me." NIV 22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." CEB 23 Therefore, the word spread among the brothers and sisters that this disciple wouldn't die. However, Jesus didn't say he wouldn't die, but only, "If I want him to remain until I come, what difference does that make to you?" NIV 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" CEB 24 This is the disciple who testifies concerning these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. NIV 24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. CEB 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If all of them were recorded, I imagine the world itself wouldn't have enough room for the scrolls that would be written. NIV 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
