John 21

MSG 1 After this, Jesus appeared again to the disciples, this time at the Tiberias Sea (the Sea of Galilee). This is how he did it: NIV 1 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: MSG 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed "Twin"), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the brothers Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. NIV 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. MSG 3 Simon Peter announced, "I'm going fishing." NIV 3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. MSG 4 When the sun came up, Jesus was standing on the beach, but they didn't recognize him. NIV 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. MSG 5 Jesus spoke to them: "Good morning! Did you catch anything for breakfast?" They answered, "No." NIV 5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. MSG 6 He said, "Throw the net off the right side of the boat and see what happens." They did what he said. All of a sudden there were so many fish in it, they weren't strong enough to pull it in. NIV 6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. MSG 7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Master!" NIV 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. MSG 8 The other disciples came in by boat for they weren't far from land, a hundred yards or so, pulling along the net full of fish. NIV 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. MSG 9 When they got out of the boat, they saw a fire laid, with fish and bread cooking on it. NIV 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. MSG 10 Jesus said, "Bring some of the fish you've just caught." NIV 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." MSG 11 Simon Peter joined them and pulled the net to shore - 153 big fish! And even with all those fish, the net didn't rip. NIV 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. MSG 12 Jesus said, "Breakfast is ready." Not one of the disciples dared ask, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Master. NIV 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. MSG 13 Jesus then took the bread and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. NIV 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. MSG 14 This was now the third time Jesus had shown himself alive to the disciples since being raised from the dead. NIV 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. MSG 15 After breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Master, you know I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." NIV 15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." MSG 16 He then asked a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Master, you know I love you." Jesus said, "Shepherd my sheep." NIV 16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." MSG 17 Then he said it a third time: "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was upset that he asked for the third time, "Do you love me?" so he answered, "Master, you know everything there is to know. You've got to know that I love you." NIV 17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. MSG 18 I'm telling you the very truth now: When you were young you dressed yourself and went wherever you wished, but when you get old you'll have to stretch out your hands while someone else dresses you and takes you where you don't want to go." NIV 18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." MSG 19 He said this to hint at the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And then he commanded, "Follow me." NIV 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!" MSG 20 Turning his head, Peter noticed the disciple Jesus loved following right behind. NIV 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") MSG 21 When Peter noticed him, he asked Jesus, "Master, what's going to happen to him?" NIV 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" MSG 22 Jesus said, "If I want him to live until I come again, what's that to you? You - follow me." NIV 22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." MSG 23 That is how the rumor got out among the brothers that this disciple wouldn't die. But that is not what Jesus said. He simply said, "If I want him to live until I come again, what's that to you?" NIV 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" MSG 24 This is the same disciple who was eyewitness to all these things and wrote them down. And we all know that his eyewitness account is reliable and accurate. NIV 24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. MSG 25 There are so many other things Jesus did. If they were all written down, each of them, one by one, I can't imagine a world big enough to hold such a library of books. NIV 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
