John 21:1-19

CEB 1 Later, Jesus himself appeared again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. This is how it happened: NRS 1 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. CEB 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus ), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee's sons, and two other disciples were together. NRS 2 Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. CEB 3 Simon Peter told them, "I'm going fishing." They said, "We'll go with you." They set out in a boat, but throughout the night they caught nothing. NRS 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. CEB 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples didn't realize it was Jesus. NRS 4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. CEB 5 Jesus called to them, "Children, have you caught anything to eat?" They answered him, "No." NRS 5 Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." CEB 6 He said, "Cast your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." So they did, and there were so many fish that they couldn't haul in the net. NRS 6 He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. CEB 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard it was the Lord, he wrapped his coat around himself (for he was naked) and jumped into the water. NRS 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. CEB 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they weren't far from shore, only about one hundred yards. NRS 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. CEB 9 When they landed, they saw a fire there, with fish on it, and some bread. NRS 9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. CEB 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you've just caught." NRS 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." CEB 11 Simon Peter got up and pulled the net to shore. It was full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three of them. Yet the net hadn't torn, even with so many fish. NRS 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. CEB 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples could bring themselves to ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. NRS 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. CEB 13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. NRS 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. CEB 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. NRS 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. CEB 15 When they finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" Simon replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." NRS 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." CEB 16 Jesus asked a second time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Simon replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus said to him, "Take care of my sheep." NRS 16 A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." CEB 17 He asked a third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was sad that Jesus asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" He replied, "Lord, you know everything; you know I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. NRS 17 He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. CEB 18 I assure you that when you were younger you tied your own belt and walked around wherever you wanted. When you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and another will tie your belt and lead you where you don't want to go." NRS 18 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." CEB 19 He said this to show the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus said to Peter, "Follow me." NRS 19 (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me."
