John 3

WNT 1 Now there was one of the Pharisees whose name was Nicodemus--a ruler among the Jews. NIV 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. WNT 2 He came to Jesus by night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher from God; for no one can do these miracles which you are doing, unless God is with him. NIV 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." WNT 3 "In most solemn truth I tell you," answered Jesus, "that unless a man is born anew he cannot see the Kingdom of God." NIV 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." WNT 4 "How is it possible," Nicodemus asked, "for a man to be born when he is old? Can he a second time enter his mother's womb and be born?" NIV 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" WNT 5 "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. NIV 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. WNT 6 Whatever has been born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever has been born of the Spirit is spirit. NIV 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. WNT 7 Do not be astonished at my telling you, `You must all be born anew.' NIV 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' WNT 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So is it with every one who has been born of the Spirit." NIV 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." WNT 9 "How is all this possible?" asked Nicodemus. NIV 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. WNT 10 "Are you," replied Jesus, "`the Teacher of Israel,' and yet do you not understand these things? NIV 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? WNT 11 In most solemn truth I tell you that we speak what we know, and give testimony of that of which we were eye-witnesses, and yet you all reject our testimony. NIV 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. WNT 12 If I have told you earthly things and none of you believe me, how will you believe me if I tell you of things in Heaven? NIV 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? WNT 13 There is no one who has gone up to Heaven, but there is One who has come down from Heaven, namely the Son of Man whose home is in Heaven. NIV 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man. WNT 14 And just as Moses lifted high the serpent in the Desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, NIV 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, WNT 15 in order that every one who trusts in Him may have the Life of the Ages." NIV 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. WNT 16 For so greatly did God love the world that He gave His only Son, that every one who trusts in Him may not perish but may have the Life of Ages. NIV 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. WNT 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. NIV 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. WNT 18 He who trusts in Him does not come up for judgement. He who does not trust has already received sentence, because he has not his trust resting on the name of God's only Son. NIV 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. WNT 19 And this is the test by which men are judged--the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness more than they loved the Light, because their deeds were wicked. NIV 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. WNT 20 For every wrongdoer hates the light, and does not come to the light, for fear his actions should be exposed and condemned. NIV 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. WNT 21 But he who does what is honest and right comes to the light, in order that his actions may be plainly shown to have been done in God. NIV 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." WNT 22 After this Jesus and His disciples went into Judaea; and there He made a stay in company with them and baptized. NIV 22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. WNT 23 And John too was baptizing at Aenon, near Salim, because there were many pools of water there; and people came and received baptism. NIV 23 Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized. WNT 24 (For John was not yet in prison.) NIV 24 (This was before John was put in prison.) WNT 25 As the result, a discussion having arisen on the part of John's disciples with a Jew about purification, NIV 25 An argument developed between some of John's disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. WNT 26 they came to John and reported to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of the Jordan and to whom you bore testimony is now baptizing, and great numbers of people are resorting to him." NIV 26 They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan--the one you testified about--well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him." WNT 27 "A man cannot obtain anything," replied John, "unless it has been granted to him from Heaven. NIV 27 To this John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. WNT 28 You yourselves can bear witness to my having said, `I am not the Christ,' but `I am His appointed forerunner.' NIV 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.' WNT 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; and the bridegroom's friend who stands by his side and listens to him, rejoices heartily on account of the bridegroom's happiness. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. NIV 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. WNT 30 He must grow greater, but I must grow less. NIV 30 He must become greater; I must become less. WNT 31 He who comes from above is above all. He whose origin is from the earth is not only himself from the earth, his teaching also is from the earth. He who comes from Heaven is above all. NIV 31 "The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. WNT 32 What He has seen and heard, to that He bears witness; but His testimony no one receives. NIV 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. WNT 33 Any man who has received His testimony has solemnly declared that God is true. NIV 33 The man who has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. WNT 34 For He whom God has sent speaks God's words; for God does not give the Spirit with limitations." NIV 34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. WNT 35 The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to His hands. NIV 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. WNT 36 He who believes in the Son has the Life of the Ages; he who disobeys the Son will not enter into Life, but God's anger remains upon him. NIV 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
