John 3:1-21

NRS 1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. NIV 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. NRS 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God." NIV 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." NRS 3 Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." NIV 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." NRS 4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" NIV 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" NRS 5 Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. NIV 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. NRS 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. NIV 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. NRS 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, "You must be born from above.' NIV 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' NRS 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." NIV 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." NRS 9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" NIV 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. NRS 10 Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? NIV 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? NRS 11 "Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. NIV 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. NRS 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? NIV 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? NRS 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. NIV 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man. NRS 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, NIV 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, NRS 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. NIV 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. NRS 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. NIV 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. NRS 17 "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. NIV 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. NRS 18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. NIV 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. NRS 19 And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. NIV 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. NRS 20 For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. NIV 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. NRS 21 But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God." NIV 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
