John 3:1-21

RSV 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicode'mus, a ruler of the Jews. NIV 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. RSV 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him." NIV 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him." RSV 3 Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God." NIV 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." RSV 4 Nicode'mus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" NIV 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" RSV 5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. NIV 5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. RSV 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. NIV 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. RSV 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born anew.' NIV 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' RSV 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit." NIV 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." RSV 9 Nicode'mus said to him, "How can this be?" NIV 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. RSV 10 Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this? NIV 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? RSV 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. NIV 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. RSV 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? NIV 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? RSV 13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. NIV 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man. RSV 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, NIV 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, RSV 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life." NIV 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. RSV 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. NIV 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. RSV 17 For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. NIV 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. RSV 18 He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. NIV 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. RSV 19 And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. NIV 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. RSV 20 For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. NIV 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. RSV 21 But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God. NIV 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
