John 4

BBE 1 Now when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptism NIV 1 The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, BBE 2 (Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself), NIV 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. BBE 3 He went out of Judaea into Galilee again. NIV 3 When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. BBE 4 And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria. NIV 4 Now he had to go through Samaria. BBE 5 So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph: NIV 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. BBE 6 Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour. NIV 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. BBE 7 A woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water. NIV 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" BBE 8 For his disciples had gone to the town to get food. NIV 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) BBE 9 The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria. NIV 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. ) BBE 10 In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water. NIV 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." BBE 11 The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water? NIV 11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? BBE 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle? NIV 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" BBE 13 Jesus said to her, Everyone who takes this water will be in need of it again: NIV 13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, BBE 14 But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life. NIV 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." BBE 15 The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be in need again of drink and will not have to come all this way for it. NIV 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." BBE 16 Jesus said to her, Go, get your husband and come back here with him. NIV 16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." BBE 17 In answer, the woman said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said rightly, I have no husband: NIV 17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. BBE 18 You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband: that was truly said. NIV 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true." BBE 19 The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet. NIV 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. BBE 20 Our fathers gave worship on this mountain, but you Jews say that the right place for worship is in Jerusalem. NIV 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." BBE 21 Jesus said to her, Woman, take my word for this; the time is coming when you will not give worship to the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. NIV 21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. BBE 22 You give worship, but without knowledge of what you are worshipping: we give worship to what we have knowledge of: for salvation comes from the Jews. NIV 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. BBE 23 But the time is coming, and is even now here, when the true worshippers will give worship to the Father in the true way of the spirit, for these are the worshippers desired by the Father. NIV 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. BBE 24 God is Spirit: then let his worshippers give him worship in the true way of the spirit. NIV 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." BBE 25 The woman said to him, I am certain that the Messiah, who is named Christ, is coming; when he comes he will make all things clear to us. NIV 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." BBE 26 Jesus said to her, I, who am talking to you, am he. NIV 26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he." BBE 27 At that point the disciples came back, and they were surprised to see him talking to a woman; but not one of them said to him, What is your purpose? or, Why are you talking to her? NIV 27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?" BBE 28 Then the woman put down her water-pot and went into the town, and said to the people, NIV 28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, BBE 29 Come and see a man who has been talking to me of everything I ever did! Is it possible that this is the Christ? NIV 29 "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ ?" BBE 30 So they went out of the town and came to him. NIV 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him. BBE 31 While this was taking place, the disciples were saying to Jesus, Master, take some food. NIV 31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something." BBE 32 But he said to them, I have food of which you have no knowledge. NIV 32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about." BBE 33 So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food? NIV 33 Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?" BBE 34 Jesus said, My food is to do the pleasure of him who sent me and to make his work complete. NIV 34 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. BBE 35 You would say, Four months from now is the time of the grain-cutting. Take a look, I say to you, at the fields; they are even now white for cutting. NIV 35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. BBE 36 He who does the cutting now has his reward; he is getting together fruit for eternal life, so that he who did the planting and he who gets in the grain may have joy together. NIV 36 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. BBE 37 In this the saying is a true one, One does the planting, and another gets in the grain. NIV 37 Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true. BBE 38 I sent you to get in grain which you had no hand in planting: other men did that work, and you take the reward. NIV 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor." BBE 39 Now a number of the people of that town had faith in him because of the woman's witness: He has been talking to me of everything I ever did. NIV 39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." BBE 40 So when the people came to him they made request to him to be among them for a time, and he was there two days. NIV 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. BBE 41 And a great number more of them came to have faith in him because of what he himself said. NIV 41 And because of his words many more became believers. BBE 42 And they said to the woman, Now we have faith, but not because of your story: we ourselves have given ear to his words, and we are certain that he is truly the Saviour of the world. NIV 42 They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." BBE 43 And after the two days he went on from there into Galilee. NIV 43 After the two days he left for Galilee. BBE 44 For Jesus himself said that a prophet has no honour in the country of his birth. NIV 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) BBE 45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans took him to their hearts because of the things which they had seen him do in Jerusalem at the feast--they themselves having been there at the feast. NIV 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, for they also had been there. BBE 46 So he came to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain man of high position whose son was ill at Capernaum. NIV 46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. BBE 47 When it came to his ears that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him and made a request that he would come down to his son, who was near to death, and make him well. NIV 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. BBE 48 Then Jesus said to him, You will not have faith if you do not see signs and wonders. NIV 48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." BBE 49 The man said, Sir, come down before my boy is dead. NIV 49 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies." BBE 50 And Jesus said, Go in peace; your son is living. The man had faith in the word which Jesus said to him and went away. NIV 50 Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. BBE 51 And while he was going down, his servants came to him and said, Your boy is living. NIV 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. BBE 52 So he put a question to them as to the hour when he became better; and they said to him, The disease went from him yesterday at the seventh hour. NIV 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." BBE 53 It was clear then to the father that this was the very time at which Jesus said to him, Your son is living. And he had faith in Jesus, he and all his family. NIV 53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed. BBE 54 Now this is the second sign which Jesus did after he had come out of Judaea into Galilee. NIV 54 This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.
