John 4

YLT 1 When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John, NIV 1 The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, YLT 2 (though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,) NIV 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. YLT 3 he left Judea and went away again to Galilee, NIV 3 When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. YLT 4 and it was behoving him to go through Samaria. NIV 4 Now he had to go through Samaria. YLT 5 He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son; NIV 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. YLT 6 and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour; NIV 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. YLT 7 there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;' NIV 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" YLT 8 for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals; NIV 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) YLT 9 the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?' for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans. NIV 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. ) YLT 10 Jesus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.' NIV 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." YLT 11 The woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water? NIV 11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? YLT 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?' NIV 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" YLT 13 Jesus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again; NIV 13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, YLT 14 but whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst -- to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.' NIV 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." YLT 15 The woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.' NIV 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." YLT 16 Jesus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;' NIV 16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." YLT 17 the woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.' Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say -- A husband I have not; NIV 17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. YLT 18 for five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.' NIV 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true." YLT 19 The woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet; NIV 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. YLT 20 our fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye -- ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.' NIV 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." YLT 21 Jesus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father; NIV 21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. YLT 22 ye worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews; NIV 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. YLT 23 but, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him; NIV 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. YLT 24 God [is] a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.' NIV 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." YLT 25 The woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;' NIV 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." YLT 26 Jesus saith to her, `I am [he], who am speaking to thee.' NIV 26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he." YLT 27 And upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?' or `Why speakest thou with her?' NIV 27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?" YLT 28 The woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men, NIV 28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, YLT 29 `Come, see a man, who told me all things -- as many as I did; is this the Christ?' NIV 29 "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ ?" YLT 30 They went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him. NIV 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him. YLT 31 And in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;' NIV 31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something." YLT 32 and he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.' NIV 32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about." YLT 33 The disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?' NIV 33 Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?" YLT 34 Jesus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work; NIV 34 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. YLT 35 do not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already. NIV 35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. YLT 36 `And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together; NIV 36 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. YLT 37 for in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper. NIV 37 Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true. YLT 38 I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered. NIV 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor." YLT 39 And from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, -- `He told me all things -- as many as I did.' NIV 39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." YLT 40 When, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days; NIV 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. YLT 41 and many more did believe because of his word, NIV 41 And because of his words many more became believers. YLT 42 and said to the woman -- `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world -- the Christ.' NIV 42 They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." YLT 43 And after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee, NIV 43 After the two days he left for Galilee. YLT 44 for Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour; NIV 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) YLT 45 when then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast -- for they also went to the feast. NIV 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, for they also had been there. YLT 46 Jesus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum, NIV 46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. YLT 47 he, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die. NIV 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. YLT 48 Jesus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.' NIV 48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." YLT 49 The courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;' NIV 49 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies." YLT 50 Jesus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.' And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on, NIV 50 Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. YLT 51 and he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying -- `Thy child doth live;' NIV 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. YLT 52 he inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him -- `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;' NIV 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." YLT 53 then the father knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him -- `Thy son doth live,' and he himself believed, and his whole house; NIV 53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed. YLT 54 this again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee. NIV 54 This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.
