John 5

BBE 1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. NIV 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. BBE 2 Now in Jerusalem near the sheep-market there is a public bath which in Hebrew is named Beth-zatha. It has five doorways. NIV 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. BBE 3 In these doorways there were a great number of people with different diseases: some unable to see, some without the power of walking, some with wasted bodies. NIV 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. BBE 4 [] BBE 5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. NIV 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. BBE 6 When Jesus saw him there on the floor it was clear to him that he had been now a long time in that condition, and so he said to the man, Is it your desire to get well? NIV 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" BBE 7 The ill man said in answer, Sir, I have nobody to put me into the bath when the water is moving; and while I am on the way down some other person gets in before me. NIV 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." BBE 8 Jesus said to him, Get up, take your bed and go. NIV 8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." BBE 9 And the man became well straight away, and took up his bed and went. Now that day was the Sabbath. NIV 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, BBE 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been made well, It is the Sabbath; and it is against the law for you to take up your bed. NIV 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." BBE 11 He said to them, But he who made me well, said to me, Take up your bed and go. NIV 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' " BBE 12 Then they put to him the question: Who is the man who said to you, Take it up and go? NIV 12 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" BBE 13 Now he who had been made well had no knowledge who it was, Jesus having gone away because of the number of people who were in that place. NIV 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. BBE 14 After a time Jesus came across him in the Temple and said to him, See, you are well and strong; do no more sin for fear a worse thing comes to you. NIV 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." BBE 15 The man went away and said to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. NIV 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. BBE 16 And for this reason the Jews were turned against Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. NIV 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. BBE 17 But his answer was: My Father is still working even now, and so I am working. NIV 17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." BBE 18 For this cause the Jews had an even greater desire to put Jesus to death, because not only did he not keep the Sabbath but he said God was his Father, so making himself equal with God. NIV 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. BBE 19 So Jesus made answer and said, Truly I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything himself; he is able to do only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does the Son does it in the same way. NIV 19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. BBE 20 For the Father has love for the Son and lets him see everything which he does: and he will let him see greater works than these so that you may be full of wonder. NIV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. BBE 21 In the same way, as the Father gives life to the dead, even so the Son gives life to those to whom he is pleased to give it. NIV 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. BBE 22 The Father is not the judge of men, but he has given all decisions into the hands of the Son; NIV 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, BBE 23 So that all men may give honour to the Son even as they give honour to the Father. He who gives no honour to the Son gives no honour to the Father who sent him. NIV 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. BBE 24 Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life. NIV 24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. BBE 25 Truly I say to you, The time is coming, it has even now come, when the voice of the Son of God will come to the ears of the dead, and those hearing it will have life. NIV 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. BBE 26 For even as the Father has life in himself, so he has given to the Son to have life in himself. NIV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. BBE 27 And he has given him authority to be judge because he is the Son of man. NIV 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. BBE 28 Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead, NIV 28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice BBE 29 And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged. NIV 29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. BBE 30 Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me. NIV 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. BBE 31 If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true. NIV 31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. BBE 32 There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true. NIV 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid. BBE 33 You sent to John and he gave true witness. NIV 33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. BBE 34 But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation. NIV 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. BBE 35 He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light. NIV 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. BBE 36 But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me. NIV 36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. BBE 37 And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen. NIV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, BBE 38 And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent. NIV 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. BBE 39 You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me. NIV 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, BBE 40 And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life. NIV 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. BBE 41 I do not take honour from men; NIV 41 "I do not accept praise from men, BBE 42 But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts. NIV 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. BBE 43 I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval. NIV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. BBE 44 How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God? NIV 44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ? BBE 45 Put out of your minds the thought that I will say things against you to the Father: the one who says things against you is Moses, on whom you put your hopes. NIV 45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. BBE 46 If you had belief in Moses you would have belief in me; for his writings are about me. NIV 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. BBE 47 If you have no belief in his writings, how will you have belief in my words? NIV 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
