John 5

CSB 1 After this, a Jewish festival took place, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. NIV 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. CSB 2 By the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has five colonnades. NIV 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. CSB 3 Within these lay a multitude of the sick-blind, lame, and paralyzed [-waiting for the moving of the water, NIV 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. CSB 4 because an angel would go down into the pool from time to time and stir up the water. Then the first one who got in after the water was stirred up recovered from whatever ailment he had]. CSB 5 One man was there who had been sick for 38 years. NIV 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. CSB 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had already been there a long time, He said to him, "Do you want to get well?" NIV 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" CSB 7 "Sir," the sick man answered, "I don't have a man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, someone goes down ahead of me." NIV 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." CSB 8 "Get up," Jesus told him, "pick up your bedroll and walk!" NIV 8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." CSB 9 Instantly the man got well, picked up his bedroll, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath, NIV 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, CSB 10 so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "This is the Sabbath! It's illegal for you to pick up your bedroll." NIV 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." CSB 11 He replied, "The man who made me well told me, 'Pick up your bedroll and walk.' " NIV 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' " CSB 12 "Who is this man who told you, 'Pick up [your bedroll] and walk?' " they asked. NIV 12 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" CSB 13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. NIV 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. CSB 14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple complex and said to him, "See, you are well. Do not sin any more, so that something worse doesn't happen to you." NIV 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." CSB 15 The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. NIV 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. CSB 16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. NIV 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. CSB 17 But Jesus responded to them, "My Father is still working, and I am working also." NIV 17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." CSB 18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him: not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. NIV 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. CSB 19 Then Jesus replied, "I assure you: The Son is not able to do anything on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does these things in the same way. NIV 19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. CSB 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing, and He will show Him greater works than these so that you will be amazed. NIV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. CSB 21 And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to anyone He wants to. NIV 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. CSB 22 The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, NIV 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, CSB 23 so that all people will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. NIV 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. CSB 24 "I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life. NIV 24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. CSB 25 "I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. NIV 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. CSB 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself. NIV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. CSB 27 And He has granted Him the right to pass judgment, because He is the Son of Man. NIV 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. CSB 28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice NIV 28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice CSB 29 and come out-those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment. NIV 29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. CSB 30 "I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. NIV 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. CSB 31 "If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid. NIV 31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. CSB 32 There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid. NIV 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid. CSB 33 You have sent [messengers] to John, and he has testified to the truth. NIV 33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. CSB 34 I don't receive man's testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. NIV 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. CSB 35 John was a burning and shining lamp, and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light. NIV 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. CSB 36 "But I have a greater testimony than John's because of the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent Me. NIV 36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. CSB 37 The Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have not heard His voice at any time, and you haven't seen His form. NIV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, CSB 38 You don't have His word living in you, because you don't believe the One He sent. NIV 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. CSB 39 You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me. NIV 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, CSB 40 And you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. NIV 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. CSB 41 "I do not accept glory from men, NIV 41 "I do not accept praise from men, CSB 42 but I know you-that you have no love for God within you. NIV 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. CSB 43 I have come in My Father's name, yet you don't accept Me. If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. NIV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. CSB 44 How can you believe? While accepting glory from one another, you don't seek the glory that comes from the only God. NIV 44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ? CSB 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope. NIV 45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. CSB 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. NIV 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. CSB 47 But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe My words?" NIV 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
