John 5

ESV 1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. NIV 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. ESV 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. NIV 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. ESV 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids--blind, lame, and paralyzed. NIV 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. ESV 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. NIV 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. ESV 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" NIV 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" ESV 7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me." NIV 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." ESV 8 Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk." NIV 8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." ESV 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. NIV 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, ESV 10 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed." NIV 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." ESV 11 But he answered them, "The man who healed me, that man said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'" NIV 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' " ESV 12 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?" NIV 12 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" ESV 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. NIV 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. ESV 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you." NIV 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." ESV 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. NIV 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. ESV 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. NIV 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. ESV 17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I am working." NIV 17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." ESV 18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. NIV 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. ESV 19 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. NIV 19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. ESV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. NIV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. ESV 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. NIV 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. ESV 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, NIV 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, ESV 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. NIV 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. ESV 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. NIV 24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. ESV 25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. NIV 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. ESV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. NIV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. ESV 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. NIV 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. ESV 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice NIV 28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice ESV 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. NIV 29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. ESV 30 "I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. NIV 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. ESV 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true. NIV 31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. ESV 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. NIV 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid. ESV 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. NIV 33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. ESV 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. NIV 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. ESV 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. NIV 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. ESV 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. NIV 36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. ESV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, NIV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, ESV 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. NIV 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. ESV 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, NIV 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, ESV 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. NIV 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. ESV 41 I do not receive glory from people. NIV 41 "I do not accept praise from men, ESV 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. NIV 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. ESV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. NIV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. ESV 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? NIV 44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ? ESV 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. NIV 45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. ESV 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. NIV 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. ESV 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?" NIV 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
