CJB 1 But Yeshua went to the Mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. CJB 2 At daybreak, he appeared again in the Temple Court, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. CJB 3 The Torah-teachers and the P'rushim brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery and made her stand in the center of the group. NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group CJB 4 Then they said to him, "Rabbi, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. CJB 5 Now in our Torah, Moshe commanded that such a woman be stoned to death. What do you say about it?" NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" CJB 6 They said this to trap him, so that they might have ground for bringing charges against him; but Yeshua bent down and began writing in the dust with his finger. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. CJB 7 When they kept questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "The one of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." CJB 8 Then he bent down and wrote in the dust again. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. CJB 9 On hearing this, they began to leave, one by one, the older ones first, until he was left alone, with the woman still there. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. CJB 10 Standing up, Yeshua said to her, "Where are they? Has no one condemned you?" NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" CJB 11 She said, "No one, sir." Yeshua said, "Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and don't sin any more." NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." CJB 12 Yeshua spoke to them again: "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light which gives life." NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." CJB 13 So the P'rushim said to him, "Now you're testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid." NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." CJB 14 Yeshua answered them, "Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony is indeed valid; because I know where I came from and where I'm going; but you do not know where I came from or where I'm going. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. CJB 15 You judge by merely human standards. As for me, I pass judgment on no one; NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. CJB 16 but if I were indeed to pass judgment, my judgment would be valid; because it is not I alone who judge, but I and the One who sent me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. CJB 17 And even in your Torah it is written that the testimony of two people is valid. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. CJB 18 I myself testify on my own behalf, and so does the Father who sent me." NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." CJB 19 They said to him, "Where is this `father' of yours?" Yeshua answered, "You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father too." NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." CJB 20 He said these things when he was teaching in the Temple treasury room; yet no one arrested him, because his time had not yet come. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. CJB 21 Again he told them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin -- where I am going, you cannot come." NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." CJB 22 The Judeans said, "Is he going to commit suicide? Is that what he means when he says, `Where I am going, you cannot come'?" NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" CJB 23 Yeshua said to them, "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. CJB 24 This is why I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not trust that I AM [who I say I am], you will die in your sins." NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." CJB 25 At this, they said to him, "You? Who are you?" Yeshua answered, "Just what I've been telling you from the start. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. CJB 26 There are many things I could say about you, and many judgments I could make. However, the One who sent me is true; so I say in the world only what I have heard from him." NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." CJB 27 They did not understand that he was talking to them about the Father. NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. CJB 28 So Yeshua said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM [who I say I am], and that of myself I do nothing, but say only what the Father has taught me. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. CJB 29 Also, the One who sent me is still with me; he did not leave me to myself, because I always do what pleases him." NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." CJB 30 Many people who heard him say these things trusted in him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. CJB 31 So Yeshua said to the Judeans who had trusted him, "If you obey what I say, then you are really my talmidim, NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. CJB 32 you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." CJB 33 They answered, "We are the seed of Avraham and have never been slaves to anyone; so what do you mean by saying, `You will be set free'?" NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" CJB 34 Yeshua answered them, "Yes, indeed! I tell you that everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. CJB 35 Now a slave does not remain with a family forever, but a son does remain with it forever. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. CJB 36 So if the Son frees you, you will really be free! NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. CJB 37 I know you are the seed of Avraham. Yet you are out to kill me, because what I am saying makes no headway in you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. CJB 38 I say what my Father has shown me; you do what your father has told you!" NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " CJB 39 They answered him, "Our father is Avraham." Yeshua replied, "If you are children of Avraham, then do the things Avraham did! NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. CJB 40 As it is, you are out to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Avraham did nothing like that! NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. CJB 41 You are doing the things your father does." "We're not illegitimate children!" they said to him. "We have only one Father -- God!" NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." CJB 42 Yeshua replied to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me; because I came out from God; and now I have arrived here. I did not come on my own; he sent me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. CJB 43 Why don't you understand what I'm saying? Because you can't bear to listen to my message. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. CJB 44 You belong to your father, Satan, and you want to carry out your father's desires. From the start he was a murderer, and he has never stood by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he is speaking in character; because he is a liar -- indeed, the inventor of the lie! NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. CJB 45 But as for me, because I tell the truth you don't believe me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! CJB 46 Which one of you can show me where I'm wrong? If I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? CJB 47 Whoever belongs to God listens to what God says; the reason you don't listen is that you don't belong to God." NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." CJB 48 The Judeans answered him, "Aren't we right in saying you are from Shomron and have a demon?" NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" CJB 49 Yeshua replied, "Me? I have no demon. I am honoring my Father. But you dishonor me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. CJB 50 I am not seeking praise for myself. There is One who is seeking it, and he is the judge. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. CJB 51 Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever obeys my teaching will never see death." NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." CJB 52 The Judeans said to him, "Now we know for sure that you have a demon! Avraham died, and so did the prophets; yet you say, `Whoever obeys my teaching will never taste death.' NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. CJB 53 Avraham avinu died; you aren't greater than he, are you? And the prophets also died. Who do you think you are?" NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" CJB 54 Yeshua answered, "If I praise myself, my praise counts for nothing. The One who is praising me is my Father, the very one about whom you keep saying, `He is our God.' NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. CJB 55 Now you have not known him, but I do know him; indeed, if I were to say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you! But I do know him, and I obey his word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. CJB 56 Avraham, your father, was glad that he would see my day; then he saw it and was overjoyed." NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." CJB 57 "Why, you're not yet fifty years old," the Judeans replied, "and you have seen Avraham?" NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" CJB 58 Yeshua said to them, "Yes, indeed! Before Avraham came into being, I AM!" NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" CJB 59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at him; but Yeshua was hidden and left the Temple grounds. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
