WYC 1 But Jesus went into the mount of Olives. NIV 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. WYC 2 And early again he came into the temple; and all the people came to him; and he sat, and taught them. NIV 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. WYC 3 And scribes and Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery, and they setted her in the middle [and set her in the middle], NIV 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group WYC 4 and said to him, Master, this woman is now taken in adultery. NIV 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. WYC 5 And in the law Moses commanded us to stone such; therefore what sayest thou? NIV 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" WYC 6 And they said this thing tempting him, that they might accuse him. And Jesus bowed himself down, and wrote with his finger in the earth. NIV 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. WYC 7 And when they abided asking him [Soothly when they lasted, or continued, asking him], he raised himself, and said to them, He of you that is without sin, first cast a stone into her. NIV 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." WYC 8 And again he bowed [down] himself, and wrote in the earth. NIV 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. WYC 9 And they hearing these things, went away one after another, and they began from the elder men [Soothly they hearing these things, went away one after another, they beginning at the elder men]; and Jesus dwelt alone, and the woman standing in the middle. NIV 9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. WYC 10 And Jesus raised himself, and said to her, Woman, where be they that accused thee? no man hath condemned thee. NIV 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" WYC 11 She said, No man, Lord. Jesus said to her, Neither I shall condemn thee; go thou, and now after do not thou sin no more [+and now afterward, do not thou do sin/do not thou sin]. NIV 11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." WYC 12 Therefore again Jesus spake to them, and said [saying], I am the light of the world; he that followeth me, walketh not in darknesses, but shall have the light of life. NIV 12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." WYC 13 Therefore the Pharisees said, Thou bearest witnessing of thyself; thy witnessing is not true. NIV 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." WYC 14 Jesus answered, and said to them, And if I bear witnessing of myself, my witnessing is true; for I know from whence I came, and whither I go. But ye know not from whence I came, nor whither I go. NIV 14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. WYC 15 For ye deem after the flesh, but I deem no man; [Forsooth ye deem after the flesh, I deem not any man;] NIV 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. WYC 16 and if I deem, my doom is true, for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. NIV 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. WYC 17 And in your law it is written, that the witnessing of two men is true. NIV 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. WYC 18 I am, that bear witnessing of myself, and the Father that sent me, beareth witnessing of me. NIV 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." WYC 19 Therefore they said to him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Neither ye know me, nor ye know my Father; if ye knew me, peradventure ye should know also my Father. NIV 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." WYC 20 Jesus spake these words in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no man took him, for his hour came not yet. NIV 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come. WYC 21 Therefore again Jesus said to them, Lo! I go, and ye shall seek me, and ye shall die in your sin; whither I go, ye be not able to come [whither I go, ye may not come]. NIV 21 Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come." WYC 22 Therefore the Jews said, Whether he shall slay himself, for he saith, Whither I go, ye be not able to come [Whither I go, ye may come]? NIV 22 This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself ? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" WYC 23 And he said to them, Ye be of beneath, I am of above; ye be of this world, I am not of this world. NIV 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. WYC 24 Therefore I said to you, that ye shall die in your sins; for if ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sins. NIV 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." WYC 25 Therefore they said to him, Who art thou? Jesus said to them, The beginning, which also speak to you [Jesus said to them, The beginning, or the first of all thing, the which and I speak to you]. NIV 25 "Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. WYC 26 I have many things to speak, and to deem of you, but he that sent me is soothfast; and I speak in the world these things, that I heard of him. NIV 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world." WYC 27 And they knew not, that he called his Father God. [And they knew not, for he said his Father God.] NIV 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. WYC 28 Therefore Jesus said to them, When ye have araised man's Son, then ye shall know, that I am, and of myself I do nothing; but as my Father taught me, I speak these things. NIV 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. WYC 29 And he that sent me is with me, and left me not alone; for I do evermore those things, that be pleasing to him. [And he that sent me is with me, and left not me alone; for I do ever those things, that be pleasant to him.] NIV 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." WYC 30 When he spake these things, many believed in him. NIV 30 Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. WYC 31 Therefore Jesus said to the Jews, that believed in him, If ye dwell in my word, verily ye shall be my disciples; NIV 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. WYC 32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. NIV 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." WYC 33 Therefore the Jews answered to him, We be the seed of Abraham, and we served never to [no] man; how sayest thou, That ye shall be free [how sayest thou, Ye shall be free]? NIV 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" WYC 34 Jesus answered to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, each man that doeth sin, is [the] servant of sin. NIV 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. WYC 35 And the servant dwelleth not in the house without end [into without end], but the Son dwelleth without end [into without end]. NIV 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. WYC 36 Therefore if the Son [shall] make you free, verily ye shall be free. NIV 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. WYC 37 I know that ye be Abraham's sons, but ye seek to slay me, for my word taketh not in you. NIV 37 I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. WYC 38 I speak those things, that I saw at my Father; and ye do those things, that ye saw at your father. NIV 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father. " WYC 39 They answered, and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them, If ye be the sons of Abraham, do ye the works of Abraham. NIV 39 "Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do the things Abraham did. WYC 40 But now ye seek to slay me, a man that have spoken to you [the] truth, that I heard of God; Abraham did not this thing. NIV 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. WYC 41 Ye do the works of your father. Therefore they said to him [And so they said to him], We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, God. NIV 41 You are doing the things your own father does." "We are not illegitimate children," they protested. "The only Father we have is God himself." WYC 42 But Jesus saith to them, If God were your Father, soothly ye should love me; for I passed forth of God, and came [forsooth I proceeded, or went forth, of God, and came]; for neither I came of myself, but he sent me. NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. WYC 43 Why know ye not my speech? for ye be not able to hear my word. NIV 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. WYC 44 Ye be of the father, the devil, and ye will do the desires of your father. He was a manslayer from the beginning, and he stood not in truth; for truth is not in him. When he speaketh lying [When he speaketh a lying], he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and father of it. NIV 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. WYC 45 But for I say truth, ye believe not to me. NIV 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! WYC 46 Who of you shall reprove me of sin? if I say truth, why believe ye not to me? NIV 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? WYC 47 He that is of God, heareth the words of God; therefore ye hear not, for ye be not of God. NIV 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." WYC 48 Therefore the Jews answered, and said [to him], Whether we say not well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? NIV 48 The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" WYC 49 Jesus answered, and said, I have not a devil, but I honour my Father, and ye have unhonoured me. NIV 49 "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. WYC 50 For I seek not my glory; there is he, that seeketh, and deemeth. NIV 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. WYC 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if any man keep my word, he shall not taste death without end. [Truly, truly, I say to you, if any man shall keep my word, he shall not see, or taste, death into without end.] NIV 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." WYC 52 Therefore the Jews said, Now we have known, that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death without end [he shall not taste death into without end]. NIV 52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. WYC 53 Whether thou art greater than our father Abraham, that is dead, and the prophets be dead; whom makest thou thyself? NIV 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" WYC 54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nought; my Father is, that glorifieth me, whom ye say, that he is your God. NIV 54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. WYC 55 And ye have not known him, but I have known him; and if I [shall] say that I know him not, I shall be a liar like to you; but I know him, and I keep his word. NIV 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. WYC 56 Abraham, your father, gladded to see my day [Abraham, your father, gladded, or full out joyed, that he should see my day]; and he saw, and joyed. NIV 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." WYC 57 Then the Jews said to him, Thou hast not yet fifty years, and hast thou seen Abraham? NIV 57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" WYC 58 Therefore Jesus said to them, Truly, truly I say to you, before that Abraham should be, I am. [Therefore Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before that Abraham was made, I am.] NIV 58 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" WYC 59 Therefore they took stones, to cast to him; but Jesus hid him(self), and went out of the temple. NIV 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
