1 Jonás huye del Señor<br />El Señor<br /> le dio el siguiente mensaje a Jonás, hijo de Amitai:

The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 «Levántate y ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive. Pronuncia mi juicio contra ella, porque he visto lo perversa que es su gente».

“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 Entonces Jonás se levantó y se fue en dirección contraria para huir del Señor<br />. Descendió al puerto de Jope donde encontró un barco que partía para Tarsis. Compró un boleto, subió a bordo y se embarcó rumbo a Tarsis con la esperanza de escapar del Señor<br />.

But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4 Ahora bien, el Señor<br /> mandó un poderoso viento sobre el mar, el cual desató una violenta tempestad que amenazaba con despedazar el barco.

Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5 Temiendo por sus vidas, los desesperados marineros pedían ayuda a sus dioses y lanzaban la carga por la borda para aligerar el barco.<br />Todo esto sucedía mientras Jonás dormía profundamente en la bodega del barco,

All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6 así que el capitán bajó a buscarlo. «¿Cómo puedes dormir en medio de esta situación? —le gritó—. ¡Levántate y ora a tu dios! Quizá nos preste atención y nos perdone la vida».

The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 Entonces la tripulación echó suertes para ver quién había ofendido a los dioses y causado tan terrible tempestad. Cuando lo hicieron, la suerte señaló a Jonás como el culpable.

Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 Así que los marineros le reclamaron:<br />—¿Por qué nos ha venido esta espantosa tormenta? ¿Quién eres? ¿En qué trabajas? ¿De qué país eres? ¿Cuál es tu nacionalidad?

So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 —Soy hebreo —contestó Jonás— y temo al Señor<br />, Dios del cielo, quien hizo el mar y la tierra.

He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Los marineros se aterraron al escuchar esto, porque Jonás ya les había contado que huía del Señor<br />.<br />—¿Ay, por qué lo hiciste? —gimieron.

This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
11 Como la tormenta seguía empeorando, le preguntaron:<br />—¿Qué debemos hacer contigo para detener esta tempestad?

The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 —Échenme al mar —contestó Jonás— y volverá la calma. Yo sé que soy el único culpable de esta terrible tormenta.

“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 Sin embargo, los marineros remaron con más fuerza para llevar el barco a tierra, pero la tempestad era tan violenta que no lo lograron.

Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
14 Entonces clamaron al Señor<br />, Dios de Jonás: «Oh Señor<br /> —le rogaron—, no nos dejes morir por el pecado de este hombre y no nos hagas responsables de su muerte. Oh Señor<br />, has enviado esta tormenta sobre él y solo tú sabes por qué».

Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”
15 Entonces los marineros tomaron a Jonás y lo lanzaron al mar embravecido, ¡y al instante se detuvo la tempestad!

Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
16 Los marineros quedaron asombrados por el gran poder del Señor<br />, le ofrecieron un sacrificio y prometieron servirle.

At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
17 Entre tanto, el Señor<br /> había provisto que un gran pez se tragara a Jonás; y Jonás estuvo dentro del pez durante tres días y tres noches.

Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
