Joshua 1

MSG 1 After the death of Moses the servant of God, God spoke to Joshua, Moses' assistant: NIV 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: MSG 2 "Moses my servant is dead. Get going. Cross this Jordan River, you and all the people. Cross to the country I'm giving to the People of Israel. NIV 2 "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them--to the Israelites. MSG 3 I'm giving you every square inch of the land you set your foot on - just as I promised Moses. NIV 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. MSG 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon east to the Great River, the Euphrates River - all the Hittite country - and then west to the Great Sea. It's all yours. NIV 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates--all the Hittite country--to the Great Sea on the west. MSG 5 All your life, no one will be able to hold out against you. In the same way I was with Moses, I'll be with you. I won't give up on you; I won't leave you. NIV 5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. MSG 6 Strength! Courage! You are going to lead this people to inherit the land that I promised to give their ancestors. NIV 6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. MSG 7 Give it everything you have, heart and soul. Make sure you carry out The Revelation that Moses commanded you, every bit of it. Don't get off track, either left or right, so as to make sure you get to where you're going. NIV 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. MSG 8 And don't for a minute let this Book of The Revelation be out of mind. Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you'll get where you're going; then you'll succeed. NIV 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. MSG 9 Haven't I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don't be timid; don't get discouraged. God, your God, is with you every step you take." The Taking of the Land NIV 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." MSG 10 Then Joshua gave orders to the people's leaders: NIV 10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: MSG 11 "Go through the camp and give this order to the people: 'Pack your bags. In three days you will cross this Jordan River to enter and take the land God, your God, is giving you to possess.'" NIV 11 "Go through the camp and tell the people, 'Get your supplies ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your own.' " MSG 12 Then Joshua addressed the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. He said, NIV 12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, MSG 13 "Remember what Moses the servant of God commanded you: God, your God, gives you rest and he gives you this land. NIV 13 "Remember the command that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: 'The LORD your God is giving you rest and has granted you this land.' MSG 14 Your wives, your children, and your livestock can stay here east of the Jordan, the country Moses gave you; but you, tough soldiers all, must cross the River in battle formation, leading your brothers, helping them NIV 14 Your wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, fully armed, must cross over ahead of your brothers. You are to help your brothers MSG 15 until God, your God, gives your brothers a place of rest just as he has done for you. They also will take possession of the land that God, your God, is giving them. Then you will be free to return to your possession, given to you by Moses the servant of God, across the Jordan to the east." NIV 15 until the LORD gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise." MSG 16 They answered Joshua: "Everything you commanded us, we'll do. Wherever you send us, we'll go. NIV 16 Then they answered Joshua, "Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. MSG 17 We obeyed Moses to the letter; we'll also obey you - we just pray that God, your God, will be with you as he was with Moses. NIV 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses. MSG 18 Anyone who questions what you say and refuses to obey whatever you command him will be put to death. Strength! Courage!"^ NIV 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey your words, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!"
