1 Las tribus del oriente regresan a su hogar<br />Entonces Josué convocó a la tribu de Rubén, a la tribu de Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés.

2 Les dijo: «Ustedes hicieron lo que Moisés, siervo del Señor<br />, les mandó, y obedecieron cada orden que yo les di.

3 Durante todo este tiempo, no abandonaron a las otras tribus. Se aseguraron de obedecer los mandatos del Señor<br /> su Dios hasta el día de hoy.

4 Y ahora el Señor<br /> su Dios ha dado descanso a las otras tribus, tal como se lo prometió. Así que vuelvan a su hogar, a la tierra que Moisés, el siervo del Señor<br />, les dio como posesión al oriente del río Jordán.

6 Entonces Josué los bendijo y los despidió, y ellos volvieron a sus hogares.

7 A la media tribu de Manasés, Moisés le había dado la tierra de Basán, al oriente del río Jordán. (A la otra mitad de la tribu se le entregó tierra al occidente del Jordán). Cuando Josué los bendijo y los despidió,

8 les dijo: «Vuelvan a sus hogares con toda la riqueza que tomaron de sus enemigos: las numerosas manadas de animales, la plata, el oro, el bronce y el hierro, y la enorme cantidad de ropa. Compartan el botín con sus parientes».

9 Entonces los hombres de Rubén, de Gad y de la media tribu de Manasés dejaron al resto del pueblo de Israel en Silo, en la tierra de Canaán. Emprendieron el viaje de regreso a su propia tierra de Galaad, el territorio que les pertenecía de acuerdo con el mandato que el Señor<br /> había dado por medio de Moisés.

10 Las tribus del oriente edifican un altar<br />Sin embargo, mientras todavía estaban en Canaán, los hombres de Rubén, de Gad y de la media tribu de Manasés se detuvieron al llegar a un lugar llamado Gelilot,<br /> cerca del río Jordán, para construir un altar grande e imponente.

11 Entonces el resto de Israel oyó que los hombres de Rubén, de Gad y de la media tribu de Manasés habían construido un altar en Gelilot, a orillas de la tierra de Canaán, en el lado occidental del río Jordán.

12 Entonces toda la comunidad de Israel se reunió en Silo y se preparó para salir a la guerra contra ellos.

13 Pero antes enviaron una delegación a cargo de Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, para hablar con la tribu de Rubén, la tribu de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés.

14 La delegación estaba formada por diez líderes de Israel, cada uno pertenecía a una de las diez tribus y era cabeza de su familia dentro de los clanes de Israel.

15 Cuando llegaron a la tierra de Galaad, les dijeron a la tribu de Rubén, a la tribu de Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés:

16 —Toda la comunidad del Señor<br /> exige saber por qué están traicionando al Dios de Israel. ¿Cómo pudieron apartarse del Señor<br /> y construirse un altar en rebeldía contra él?

17 ¿Acaso no fue suficiente el pecado que cometimos en Peor? Hasta el día de hoy, no estamos completamente limpios de ese pecado, incluso después de la plaga que azotó a toda la comunidad del Señor<br />.

18 Y ahora ustedes le dan la espalda al Señor<br />. Si hoy ustedes se rebelan contra el Señor<br />, mañana él se enojará con todos nosotros.

19 »Si necesitan el altar porque la tierra de ustedes es impura, entonces únanse a nosotros en la tierra del Señor<br />, donde se encuentra el tabernáculo del Señor<br />, y compartan nuestra tierra. Pero no se rebelen contra el Señor<br /> ni contra nosotros al construir un altar diferente del altar único y verdadero del Señor<br /> nuestro Dios.

20 ¿Acaso no cayó el enojo divino sobre toda la comunidad de Israel cuando Acán, un miembro del clan de Zera, pecó al robar las cosas que estaban apartadas para el Señor<br />?<br /> Él no fue el único que murió a causa de su pecado.

21 Entonces la gente de Rubén, de Gad y de la media tribu de Manasés les respondieron a esos líderes, cabezas de los clanes de Israel:

22 —¡El Señor<br />, el Poderoso, es Dios! ¡El Señor<br />, el Poderoso, es Dios! Él conoce la verdad, ¡y que Israel también la sepa! Nosotros no construimos el altar por traición o en rebeldía contra el Señor<br />. Si fuera así, no nos perdonen la vida ni un día más.

23 Si en verdad construimos un altar para nosotros, para apartarnos del Señor<br /> o para presentar ofrendas quemadas, ofrendas de grano u ofrendas de paz, que el Señor<br /> mismo nos castigue.

24 »La verdad es que construimos este altar porque tenemos miedo de que, en el futuro, sus descendientes les digan a los nuestros: “¿Qué derecho tienen ustedes de adorar al Señor<br />, Dios de Israel?

25 El Señor<br /> ha puesto el río Jordán como una barrera entre nuestra gente y ustedes, gente de Rubén y de Gad. Ustedes no tienen derecho de afirmar que pertenecen al Señor<br />”. Así, los descendientes de ustedes podrían impedirles a los nuestros que adoraran al Señor<br />.

26 »Por eso decidimos construir el altar, no para presentar ofrendas quemadas o sacrificios,

27 sino como un monumento conmemorativo. Les recordará a nuestros descendientes y a los de ustedes que nosotros también tenemos el derecho de adorar al Señor<br /> en su santuario con nuestros sacrificios, nuestras ofrendas quemadas y ofrendas de paz. Entonces sus descendientes no podrán decirles a los nuestros: “Ustedes no tienen derecho de afirmar que pertenecen al Señor<br />”.

28 »Si ellos dicen eso, nuestros descendientes podrán responder: “Miren esta réplica del altar del Señor<br /> que construyeron nuestros antepasados. No es para sacrificios ni ofrendas quemadas, es para recordarnos la relación que ambos tenemos con el Señor<br />”.

29 Lejos esté de nosotros rebelarnos contra el Señor<br /> o apartarnos de él al construir nuestro propio altar para presentar sacrificios, ofrendas quemadas y ofrendas de grano. Únicamente el altar del Señor<br /> nuestro Dios —que está delante del tabernáculo— puede usarse para ese propósito.

30 Cuando el sacerdote Finees y los líderes de la comunidad —cabezas de los clanes de Israel— oyeron eso de boca de la tribu de Rubén, de la tribu de Gad y de la media tribu de Manasés, quedaron conformes.

31 Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, les respondió:<br />—Hoy sabemos que el Señor<br /> está entre nosotros, porque ustedes no han cometido esa traición contra el Señor<br /> como nosotros habíamos pensado. En cambio, han rescatado a Israel de ser destruido por mano del Señor<br />.

32 Después Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, y los otros líderes dejaron a la tribu de Rubén y a la tribu de Gad en Galaad y regresaron a la tierra de Canaán para contarles a los israelitas lo que había sucedido.

1 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh

2 and said to them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and you have obeyed me in everything I commanded.

3 For a long time now—to this very day—you have not deserted your fellow Israelites but have carried out the mission the LORD your God gave you.

4 Now that the LORD your God has given them rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan.

5 But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

6 Then Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their homes.

7 (To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given land in Bashan, and to the other half of the tribe Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan along with their fellow Israelites.) When Joshua sent them home, he blessed them,

8 saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth—with large herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and a great quantity of clothing—and divide the plunder from your enemies with your fellow Israelites.”

9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh in Canaan to return to Gilead, their own land, which they had acquired in accordance with the command of the LORD through Moses.

10 When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

11 And when the Israelites heard that they had built the altar on the border of Canaan at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side,

12 the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go to war against them.

13 So the Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to the land of Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

14 With him they sent ten of the chief men, one from each of the tribes of Israel, each the head of a family division among the Israelite clans.

15 When they went to Gilead—to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh—they said to them:

16 “The whole assembly of the LORD says: ‘How could you break faith with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the LORD and build yourselves an altar in rebellion against him now?

17 Was not the sin of Peor enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the LORD!

18 And are you now turning away from the LORD? “ ‘If you rebel against the LORD today, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel.

19 If the land you possess is defiled, come over to the LORD’s land, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and share the land with us. But do not rebel against the LORD or against us by building an altar for yourselves, other than the altar of the LORD our God.

20 When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful in regard to the devoted things, did not wrath come on the whole community of Israel? He was not the only one who died for his sin.’ ”

21 Then Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel:

22 “The Mighty One, God, the LORD! The Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows! And let Israel know! If this has been in rebellion or disobedience to the LORD, do not spare us this day.

23 If we have built our own altar to turn away from the LORD and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the LORD himself call us to account.

24 “No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?

25 The LORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the LORD.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.

26 “That is why we said, ‘Let us get ready and build an altar—but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.’

27 On the contrary, it is to be a witness between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the LORD at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings. Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD.’

28 “And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the LORD’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’

29 “Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and turn away from him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings and sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God that stands before his tabernacle.”

30 When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the community—the heads of the clans of the Israelites—heard what Reuben, Gad and Manasseh had to say, they were pleased.

31 And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is with us, because you have not been unfaithful to the LORD in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the LORD’s hand.”

32 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.

33 They were glad to hear the report and praised God. And they talked no more about going to war against them to devastate the country where the Reubenites and the Gadites lived.

34 And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness Between Us—that the LORD is God.
