1 El pacto del Señor<br /> es renovado<br />Entonces Josué convocó a todas las tribus de Israel en Siquem, junto con los ancianos, los líderes, los jueces y los oficiales. Así que todos se reunieron y se presentaron ante Dios.

2 Josué le dijo al pueblo:<br />—Esto dice el Señor<br />, Dios de Israel: Hace mucho, tus antepasados, entre ellos Taré, el padre de Abraham y Nacor, vivían del otro lado del río Éufrates<br /> y rindieron culto a otros dioses.

3 Pero yo tomé a tu antepasado Abraham de la tierra que está al otro lado del Éufrates y lo guié a la tierra de Canaán. Le di muchos descendientes por medio de su hijo Isaac.

6 Pero cuando tus antepasados llegaron al mar Rojo,<br /> los egipcios te persiguieron con sus carros de guerra y sus jinetes.

7 Cuando tus antepasados clamaron al Señor<br />, puse oscuridad entre ti y los egipcios. Hice que el mar cayera sobre los egipcios y los ahogara. Con tus propios ojos viste lo que hice. Luego viviste muchos años en el desierto.

8 »Finalmente, te llevé a la tierra de los amorreos, al oriente del Jordán. Ellos pelearon contra ti, pero yo los destruí delante de tus ojos. Te di la victoria sobre ellos, y tomaste posesión de su tierra.

9 Después Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab, empezó una guerra contra Israel. Llamó a Balaam, hijo de Beor, para que te maldijera,

10 pero yo no lo quise escuchar. En cambio, hice que Balaam te bendijera y entonces te rescaté de Balac.

11 »Cuando cruzaste el río Jordán y llegaste a Jericó, los hombres de Jericó pelearon contra ti, como lo hicieron los amorreos, los ferezeos, los cananeos, los hititas, los gergeseos, los heveos y los jebuseos. Pero yo te di la victoria sobre ellos.

12 Y envié terror<br /> antes de que llegaras, para expulsar a los dos reyes amorreos. No fueron tus espadas ni tus arcos los que te dieron la victoria.

13 Yo te di tierra que no habías trabajado y ciudades que no construiste, en las cuales vives ahora. Te di viñedos y huertos de olivos como alimento, aunque tú no los plantaste.

14 »Por lo tanto, teme al Señor<br /> y sírvelo con todo el corazón. Echa fuera para siempre los ídolos que tus antepasados adoraron cuando vivían del otro lado del río Éufrates y en Egipto. Sirve sólo al Señor<br />.

15 Pero si te niegas a servir al Señor<br />, elige hoy mismo a quién servirás. ¿Acaso optarás por los dioses que tus antepasados sirvieron del otro lado del Éufrates? ¿O preferirás a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra ahora vives? Pero en cuanto a mí y a mi familia, nosotros serviremos al Señor<br />.

16 El pueblo respondió:<br />—Nosotros jamás abandonaríamos al Señor<br /> ni serviríamos a otros dioses.

17 Pues el Señor<br /> nuestro Dios es el que nos rescató a nosotros y a nuestros antepasados de la esclavitud en la tierra de Egipto. Él hizo milagros poderosos ante nuestros propios ojos. Cuando andábamos por el desierto, rodeados de enemigos, él nos protegió.

18 Fue el Señor<br /> quien expulsó a los amorreos y a las otras naciones que vivían aquí, en esta tierra. Por lo tanto, nosotros también serviremos al Señor<br />, porque solo él es nuestro Dios.

19 Entonces Josué advirtió a los israelitas:<br />—Ustedes no son capaces de servir al Señor<br />, porque él es Dios santo y celoso. No les perdonará su rebelión ni sus pecados.

20 Si abandonan al Señor<br /> y sirven a otros dioses, él se pondrá en contra de ustedes y los destruirá, aunque les haya hecho tanto bien en el pasado.

21 Pero los israelitas respondieron a Josué:<br />—¡Eso no! Nosotros serviremos al Señor<br />.

22 —Ustedes son testigos de su propia decisión —les dijo Josué—. Hoy han elegido servir al Señor<br />.<br />—Claro que sí —respondieron—, somos testigos de lo que dijimos.

23 —Muy bien —dijo Josué—, entonces destruyan los ídolos que tienen entre ustedes y entréguenle el corazón al Señor<br />, Dios de Israel.

24 Entonces los israelitas le dijeron a Josué:<br />—Serviremos al Señor<br /> nuestro Dios. Lo obedeceremos solo a él.

25 Entonces, ese día en Siquem, Josué hizo un pacto con ellos, el cual los comprometía a seguir los decretos y las ordenanzas del Señor<br />.

26 Josué escribió todas esas cosas en el libro de instrucción de Dios. Como recordatorio del acuerdo, tomó una piedra enorme y la llevó rodando hasta debajo del árbol de terebinto que estaba junto al tabernáculo del Señor<br />.

27 Josué le dijo a todo el pueblo:<br />—Esta piedra escuchó todo lo que el Señor<br /> nos dijo. Será un testigo en contra de ustedes si no cumplen lo que le prometieron a Dios.

28 Después Josué mandó que todo israelita regresara a su tierra, cada uno a su hogar.

29 Líderes enterrados en la Tierra Prometida<br />Después de eso, Josué, hijo de Nun y siervo del Señor<br />, murió a los ciento diez años de edad.

30 Lo enterraron en Timnat-sera, tierra que se le había asignado en la zona montañosa de Efraín, al norte del monte Gaas.

31 El pueblo de Israel sirvió al Señor<br /> durante toda la vida de Josué y de los ancianos que murieron después de él, los cuales habían vivido en persona todo lo que el Señor<br /> había hecho por Israel.

32 Los huesos de José —los cuales los israelitas llevaron consigo cuando salieron de Egipto— fueron enterrados en Siquem, en la porción de tierra que Jacob le había comprado a los hijos de Hamor por cien piezas de plata.<br /> Esa tierra estaba situada en el territorio asignado a los descendientes de José.

33 Murió también Eleazar, hijo de Aarón. Fue enterrado en la zona montañosa de Efraín, en la ciudad de Guibeá, la cual se le había entregado a su hijo Finees.

1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.

2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.

3 But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,

4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.

5 “ ‘Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out.

6 When I brought your people out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea.

7 But they cried to the LORD for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.

8 “ ‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.

9 When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a curse on you.

10 But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.

11 “ ‘Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands.

12 I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you—also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow.

13 So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’

14 “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!

17 It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.

18 And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God.”

19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.

20 If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”

21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the LORD.”

22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.

23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”

24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey him.”

25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws.

26 And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the LORD.

27 “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”

28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.

29 After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten.

30 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

31 Israel served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the LORD had done for Israel.

32 And Joseph’s bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants.

33 And Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah, which had been allotted to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
