Judges 1

ESV 1 After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, "Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?" NIV 1 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?" ESV 2 The LORD said, "Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand." NIV 2 The LORD answered, "Judah is to go; I have given the land into their hands." ESV 3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you." So Simeon went with him. NIV 3 Then the men of Judah said to the Simeonites their brothers, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them. ESV 4 Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek. NIV 4 When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. ESV 5 They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. NIV 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. ESV 6 Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. NIV 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. ESV 7 And Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me." And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. NIV 7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. ESV 8 And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. NIV 8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire. ESV 9 And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland. NIV 9 After that, the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills. ESV 10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. NIV 10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. ESV 11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher. NIV 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). ESV 12 And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife." NIV 12 And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher." ESV 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife. NIV 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage. ESV 14 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you want?" NIV 14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?" ESV 15 She said to him, "Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. NIV 15 She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." Then Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. ESV 16 And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people. NIV 16 The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the men of Judah to live among the people of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad. ESV 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah. NIV 17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their brothers and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah. ESV 18 Judah also captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. NIV 18 The men of Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron--each city with its territory. ESV 19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron. NIV 19 The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots. ESV 20 And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the three sons of Anak. NIV 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. ESV 21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day. NIV 21 The Benjamites, however, failed to dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites. ESV 22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them. NIV 22 Now the house of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them. ESV 23 And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.) NIV 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), ESV 24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Please show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you." NIV 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well." ESV 25 And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. NIV 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. ESV 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day. NIV 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day. ESV 27 Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. NIV 27 But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. ESV 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely. NIV 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely. ESV 29 And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them. NIV 29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. ESV 30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor. NIV 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, who remained among them; but they did subject them to forced labor. ESV 31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, NIV 31 Nor did Asher drive out those living in Acco or Sidon or Ahlab or Aczib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob, ESV 32 so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out. NIV 32 and because of this the people of Asher lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land. ESV 33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them. NIV 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. ESV 34 The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. NIV 34 The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain. ESV 35 The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. NIV 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the house of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. ESV 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward. NIV 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
