Judges 1

HNV 1 It happened after the death of Yehoshua, the children of Yisra'el asked of the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Kana`anim, to fight against them? NIV 1 After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?" HNV 2 The LORD said, Yehudah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. NIV 2 The LORD answered, "Judah is to go; I have given the land into their hands." HNV 3 Yehudah said to Shim`on his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Kana`anim; and I likewise will go with you into your lot. So Shim`on went with him. NIV 3 Then the men of Judah said to the Simeonites their brothers, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them. HNV 4 Yehudah went up; and the LORD delivered the Kana`anim and the Perizzi into their hand: and they struck of them in Bezek ten thousand men. NIV 4 When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. HNV 5 They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they struck the Kana`anim and the Perizzi. NIV 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. HNV 6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. NIV 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. HNV 7 Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered [their food] under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me." They brought him to Yerushalayim, and he died there. NIV 7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. HNV 8 The children of Yehudah fought against Yerushalayim, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. NIV 8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire. HNV 9 Afterward the children of Yehudah went down to fight against the Kana`anim who lived in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland. NIV 9 After that, the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills. HNV 10 Yehudah went against the Kana`anim who lived in Hevron (now the name of Hevron before was Kiryat-Arba); and they struck Sheshai, and Achiman, and Talmai. NIV 10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. HNV 11 From there he went against the inhabitants of Devir. (Now the name of Devir before was Kiryat-Sefer.) NIV 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). HNV 12 Kalev said, He who strikes Kiryat-Sefer, and takes it, to him will I give `Akhsah my daughter as wife. NIV 12 And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher." HNV 13 `Otni'el the son of Kenaz, Kalev's younger brother, took it: and he gave him `Akhsah his daughter as wife. NIV 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage. HNV 14 It happened, when she came [to him], that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her donkey; and Kalev said to her, What would you? NIV 14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?" HNV 15 She said to him, Give me a blessing; for that you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. Kalev gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. NIV 15 She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." Then Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. HNV 16 The children of the Keni, Moshe' brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Yehudah into the wilderness of Yehudah, which is in the south of `Arad; and they went and lived with the people. NIV 16 The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the men of Judah to live among the people of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad. HNV 17 Yehudah went with Shim`on his brother, and they struck the Kana`anim who inhabited Tzefat, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah. NIV 17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their brothers and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah. HNV 18 Also Yehudah took `Aza with the border of it, and Ashkelon with the border of it, and `Ekron with the border of it. NIV 18 The men of Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron--each city with its territory. HNV 19 The LORD was with Yehudah; and drove out [the inhabitants of] the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. NIV 19 The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots. HNV 20 They gave Hevron to Kalev, as Moshe had spoken: and he drove out there the three sons of `Anak. NIV 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. HNV 21 The children of Binyamin did not drive out the Yevusi who inhabited Yerushalayim; but the Yevusi dwell with the children of Binyamin in Yerushalayim to this day. NIV 21 The Benjamites, however, failed to dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites. HNV 22 The house of Yosef, they also went up against Beit-El; and the LORD was with them. NIV 22 Now the house of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them. HNV 23 The house of Yosef sent to spy out Beit-El. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) NIV 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), HNV 24 The watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said to him, Show us, we pray you, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you. NIV 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well." HNV 25 He shown them the entrance into the city; and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family. NIV 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. HNV 26 The man went into the land of the Hitti, and built a city, and called the name of it Luz, which is the name of it to this day. NIV 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day. HNV 27 Menashsheh did not drive out [the inhabitants of] Beit-She'an and its towns, nor [of] Ta`nakh and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Yivle`am and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Kana`anim would dwell in that land. NIV 27 But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. HNV 28 It happened, when Yisra'el had grown strong, that they put the Kana`anim to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out. NIV 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely. HNV 29 Efrayim didn't drive out the Kana`anim who lived in Gezer; but the Kana`anim lived in Gezer among them. NIV 29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. HNV 30 Zevulun didn't drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Kana`anim lived among them, and became subject to forced labor. NIV 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, who remained among them; but they did subject them to forced labor. HNV 31 Asher didn't drive out the inhabitants of `Akko, nor the inhabitants of Tzidon, nor of Achlav, nor of Akhziv, nor of Helbah, nor of Afik, nor of Rechov; NIV 31 Nor did Asher drive out those living in Acco or Sidon or Ahlab or Aczib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob, HNV 32 but the Asheri lived among the Kana`anim, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out. NIV 32 and because of this the people of Asher lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land. HNV 33 Naftali didn't drive out the inhabitants of Beit-Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beit-`Anat; but he lived among the Kana`anim, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beit-Shemesh and of Beit-`Anat became subject to forced labor. NIV 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. HNV 34 The Amori forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; NIV 34 The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain. HNV 35 but the Amori would dwell in Mount Heres, in Ayalon, and in Sha`alvim: yet the hand of the house of Yosef prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor. NIV 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the house of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. HNV 36 The border of the Amori was from the ascent of `Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward. NIV 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
