NRS 1 After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, who lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim, rose to deliver Israel. NIV 1 After the time of Abimelech a man of Issachar, Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim. NRS 2 He judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died, and was buried at Shamir. NIV 2 He led Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir. NRS 3 After him came Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. NIV 3 He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years. NRS 4 He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys; and they had thirty towns, which are in the land of Gilead, and are called Havvoth-jair to this day. NIV 4 He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair. NRS 5 Jair died, and was buried in Kamon. NIV 5 When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon. NRS 6 The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, worshiping the Baals and the Astartes, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. Thus they abandoned the Lord, and did not worship him. NIV 6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the LORD and no longer served him, NRS 7 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, NIV 7 he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites, NRS 8 and they crushed and oppressed the Israelites that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites. NRS 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was greatly distressed. NIV 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was in great distress. NRS 10 So the Israelites cried to the Lord, saying, "We have sinned against you, because we have abandoned our God and have worshiped the Baals." NIV 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals." NRS 11 And the Lord said to the Israelites, "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? NIV 11 The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, NRS 12 The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, oppressed you; and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. NIV 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands? NRS 13 Yet you have abandoned me and worshiped other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more. NIV 13 But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you. NRS 14 Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress." NIV 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!" NRS 15 And the Israelites said to the Lord, "We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you; but deliver us this day!" NIV 15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now." NRS 16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them and worshiped the Lord; and he could no longer bear to see Israel suffer. NIV 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery no longer. NRS 17 Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead; and the Israelites came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. NIV 17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah. NRS 18 The commanders of the people of Gilead said to one another, "Who will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead." NIV 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head of all those living in Gilead."
