Lamentations 3

CSB 1 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God's wrath. NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. CSB 2 He has driven me away and forced [me] to walk in darkness instead of light. NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; CSB 3 Yes, He repeatedly turns His hand against me all day long. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. CSB 4 He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. CSB 5 He has laid siege against me, encircling me with bitterness and hardship. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. CSB 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those who have been dead for ages. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. CSB 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. CSB 8 Even when I cry out and plead for help, He rejects my prayer. NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. CSB 9 He has walled in my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. CSB 10 He is a bear waiting in ambush, a lion in hiding; NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, CSB 11 He forced me off my way and tore me to pieces; He left me desolate. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. CSB 12 He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. CSB 13 He pierced my kidneys with His arrows. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. CSB 14 I am a laughingstock to all my people, mocked by their songs all day long. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. CSB 15 He filled me with bitterness, sated me with wormwood. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall. CSB 16 He ground my teeth on gravel and made me cower in the dust. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. CSB 17 My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is. NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. CSB 18 Then I thought: My future is lost, as well as my hope from the Lord. NIV 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD." CSB 19 Remember my affliction and my homelessness, the wormwood and the poison. NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. CSB 20 I continually remember [them] and have become depressed. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. CSB 21 Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: CSB 22 [Because of] the Lord's faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. NIV 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. CSB 23 They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. CSB 24 I say: The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him. NIV 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." CSB 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; CSB 26 It is good to wait quietly for deliverance from the Lord. NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. CSB 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is [still] young. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. CSB 28 Let him sit alone and be silent, for God has disciplined him. NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. CSB 29 Let him put his mouth in the dust- perhaps there is [still] hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope. CSB 30 Let him offer [his] cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with shame. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. CSB 31 For the Lord will not reject [us] forever. NIV 31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. CSB 32 Even if He causes suffering, He will show compassion according to His abundant, faithful love. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. CSB 33 For He does not enjoy bringing affliction or suffering on mankind. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. CSB 34 Crushing all the prisoners of the land beneath one's feet, NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, CSB 35 denying justice to a man in the presence of the Most High, NIV 35 to deny a man his rights before the Most High, CSB 36 or suppressing a person's lawsuit- the Lord does not approve [of these things]. NIV 36 to deprive a man of justice-- would not the Lord see such things? CSB 37 Who is there who speaks and it happens, unless the Lord has ordained [it]? NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? CSB 38 Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High? NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? CSB 39 Why should [any] living person complain, [any] man, because of the punishment for his sins? NIV 39 Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins? CSB 40 Let us search out and examine our ways, and turn back to the Lord. NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. CSB 41 Let us lift up our hearts and [our] hands to God in heaven: NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: CSB 42 We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven. NIV 42 "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. CSB 43 You have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us; You have killed without compassion. NIV 43 "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. CSB 44 You have covered Yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can pass through. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. CSB 45 You have made us disgusting filth among the peoples. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. CSB 46 All our enemies open their mouths against us. NIV 46 "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. CSB 47 We have experienced panic and pitfall, devastation and destruction. NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction." CSB 48 My eyes flow with streams of tears because of the destruction of my dear people. NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. CSB 49 My eyes overflow unceasingly, without end, NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, CSB 50 until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. CSB 51 My eyes bring me grief because of [the fate of] all the women in my city. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. CSB 52 For no [apparent] reason, my enemies hunted me like a bird. NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. CSB 53 They dropped me alive into a pit and threw stones at me. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; CSB 54 Water flooded over my head, and I thought: I'm going to die! NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off. CSB 55 I called on Your name, Yahweh, from the depths of the Pit. NIV 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. CSB 56 You hear my plea: Do not ignore my cry for relief. NIV 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." CSB 57 You come near when I call on You; You say: "Do not be afraid." NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear." CSB 58 You defend my cause, Lord; You redeem my life. NIV 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life. CSB 59 Lord, You see the wrong done to me; judge my case. NIV 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! CSB 60 You see all their malice, all their plots against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. CSB 61 Lord, You hear their insults, all their plots against me. NIV 61 O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me-- CSB 62 The slander and murmuring of my opponents attack me all day long. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. CSB 63 When they sit and when they rise, look, I am mocked by their songs. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. CSB 64 You will pay them back what they deserve, Lord, according to the work of their hands. NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done. CSB 65 You will give them a heart filled with anguish. May Your curse be on them! NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! CSB 66 You will pursue [them] in anger and destroy them under Your heavens. NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
