Lamentations 3

HNV 1 I am the man that has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. HNV 2 He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light. NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; HNV 3 Surely against me he turns his hand again and again all the day. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. HNV 4 My flesh and my skin has he made old; he has broken my bones. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. HNV 5 He has built against me, and compassed me with gall and travail. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. HNV 6 He has made me to dwell in dark places, as those that have been long dead. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. HNV 7 He has walled me about, that I can't go forth; he has made my chain heavy. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. HNV 8 Yes, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer. NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. HNV 9 He has walled up my ways with hewn stone; he has made my paths crooked. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. HNV 10 He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in secret places. NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, HNV 11 He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he has made me desolate. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. HNV 12 He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. HNV 13 He has caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my reins. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. HNV 14 I am become a derision to all my people, and their song all the day. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. HNV 15 He has filled me with bitterness, he has sated me with wormwood. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall. HNV 16 He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones; he has covered me with ashes. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. HNV 17 You have removed my soul far off from shalom; I forgot prosperity. NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. HNV 18 I said, My strength is perished, and my expectation from the LORD. NIV 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD." HNV 19 Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. HNV 20 My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. HNV 21 This I recall to my mind; therefore have I hope. NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: HNV 22 [It is of] the LORD's lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. NIV 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. HNV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. HNV 24 The LORD is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I hope in him. NIV 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." HNV 25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; HNV 26 It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. HNV 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. HNV 28 Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he has laid it on him. NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. HNV 29 Let him put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope. HNV 30 Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him; let him be filled full with reproach. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. HNV 31 For the Lord will not cast off forever. NIV 31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. HNV 32 For though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. HNV 33 For he does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. HNV 34 To crush under foot all the prisoners of the eretz, NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, HNV 35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of Ha`Elyon, NIV 35 to deny a man his rights before the Most High, HNV 36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord doesn't approve. NIV 36 to deprive a man of justice-- would not the Lord see such things? HNV 37 Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord doesn't command it? NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? HNV 38 Doesn't evil and good come out of the mouth of Ha`Elyon? NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? HNV 39 Why does a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? NIV 39 Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins? HNV 40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. HNV 41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens. NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: HNV 42 We have transgressed and have rebelled; you have not pardoned. NIV 42 "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. HNV 43 You have covered with anger and pursued us; you have killed, you have not pitied. NIV 43 "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. HNV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. HNV 45 You have made us an off-scouring and refuse in the midst of the peoples. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. HNV 46 All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us. NIV 46 "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. HNV 47 Fear and the pit are come on us, devastation and destruction. NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction." HNV 48 My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. HNV 49 My eye pours down, and doesn't cease, without any intermission, NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, HNV 50 Until the LORD look down, and see from heaven. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. HNV 51 My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. HNV 52 They have chased me sore like a bird, those who are my enemies without cause. NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. HNV 53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone on me. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; HNV 54 Waters flowed over my head; I said, I am cut off. NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off. HNV 55 I called on your name, LORD, out of the lowest dungeon. NIV 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. HNV 56 You heard my voice; don't hide your ear at my breathing, at my cry. NIV 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." HNV 57 You drew near in the day that I called on you; you said, Don't be afraid. NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear." HNV 58 Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul; you have redeemed my life. NIV 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life. HNV 59 LORD, you have seen my wrong; judge you my cause. NIV 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! HNV 60 You have seen all their vengeance and all their devices against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. HNV 61 You have heard their reproach, LORD, and all their devices against me, NIV 61 O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me-- HNV 62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. HNV 63 See you their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their song. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. HNV 64 You will render to them a recompense, LORD, according to the work of their hands. NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done. HNV 65 You will give them hardness of heart, your curse to them. NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! HNV 66 You will pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD. NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
