Leviticus 11

NRS 1 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them: NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, NRS 2 Speak to the people of Israel, saying: From among all the land animals, these are the creatures that you may eat. NIV 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: NRS 3 Any animal that has divided hoofs and is cleft-footed and chews the cud—such you may eat. NIV 3 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud. NRS 4 But among those that chew the cud or have divided hoofs, you shall not eat the following: the camel, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. NIV 4 " 'There are some that only chew the cud or only have a split hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. NRS 5 The rock badger, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. NIV 5 The coney, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. NRS 6 The hare, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. NIV 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. NRS 7 The pig, for even though it has divided hoofs and is cleft-footed, it does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. NIV 7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. NRS 8 Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean for you. NIV 8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you. NRS 9 These you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the streams—such you may eat. NIV 9 " 'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. NRS 10 But anything in the seas or the streams that does not have fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and among all the other living creatures that are in the waters—they are detestable to you NIV 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales--whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water--you are to detest. NRS 11 and detestable they shall remain. Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall regard as detestable. NIV 11 And since you are to detest them, you must not eat their meat and you must detest their carcasses. NRS 12 Everything in the waters that does not have fins and scales is detestable to you. NIV 12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you. NRS 13 These you shall regard as detestable among the birds. They shall not be eaten; they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey, NIV 13 " 'These are the birds you are to detest and not eat because they are detestable: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, NRS 14 the buzzard, the kite of any kind; NIV 14 the red kite, any kind of black kite, NRS 15 every raven of any kind; NIV 15 any kind of raven, NRS 16 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind; NIV 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, NRS 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, NIV 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, NRS 18 the water hen, the desert owl, the carrion vulture, NIV 18 the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, NRS 19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat. NIV 19 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat. NRS 20 All winged insects that walk upon all fours are detestable to you. NIV 20 " 'All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. NRS 21 But among the winged insects that walk on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs above their feet, with which to leap on the ground. NIV 21 There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. NRS 22 Of them you may eat: the locust according to its kind, the bald locust according to its kind, the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind. NIV 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. NRS 23 But all other winged insects that have four feet are detestable to you. NIV 23 But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest. NRS 24 By these you shall become unclean; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until the evening, NIV 24 " 'You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. NRS 25 and whoever carries any part of the carcass of any of them shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. NIV 25 Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean till evening. NRS 26 Every animal that has divided hoofs but is not cleft-footed or does not chew the cud is unclean for you; everyone who touches one of them shall be unclean. NIV 26 " 'Every animal that has a split hoof not completely divided or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches [the carcass of] any of them will be unclean. NRS 27 All that walk on their paws, among the animals that walk on all fours, are unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them shall be unclean until the evening, NIV 27 Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. NRS 28 and the one who carries the carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean for you. NIV 28 Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean till evening. They are unclean for you. NRS 29 These are unclean for you among the creatures that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, the mouse, the great lizard according to its kind, NIV 29 " 'Of the animals that move about on the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, NRS 30 the gecko, the land crocodile, the lizard, the sand lizard, and the chameleon. NIV 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. NRS 31 These are unclean for you among all that swarm; whoever touches one of them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening. NIV 31 Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. NRS 32 And anything upon which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether an article of wood or cloth or skin or sacking, any article that is used for any purpose; it shall be dipped into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening, and then it shall be clean. NIV 32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. NRS 33 And if any of them falls into any earthen vessel, all that is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break the vessel. NIV 33 If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot. NRS 34 Any food that could be eaten shall be unclean if water from any such vessel comes upon it; and any liquid that could be drunk shall be unclean if it was in any such vessel. NIV 34 Any food that could be eaten but has water on it from such a pot is unclean, and any liquid that could be drunk from it is unclean. NRS 35 Everything on which any part of the carcass falls shall be unclean; whether an oven or stove, it shall be broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall remain unclean for you. NIV 35 Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. NRS 36 But a spring or a cistern holding water shall be clean, while whatever touches the carcass in it shall be unclean. NIV 36 A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. NRS 37 If any part of their carcass falls upon any seed set aside for sowing, it is clean; NIV 37 If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. NRS 38 but if water is put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. NIV 38 But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. NRS 39 If an animal of which you may eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. NIV 39 " 'If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches the carcass will be unclean till evening. NRS 40 Those who eat of its carcass shall wash their clothes and be unclean until the evening; and those who carry the carcass shall wash their clothes and be unclean until the evening. NIV 40 Anyone who eats some of the carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash his clothes, and he will be unclean till evening. NRS 41 All creatures that swarm upon the earth are detestable; they shall not be eaten. NIV 41 " 'Every creature that moves about on the ground is detestable; it is not to be eaten. NRS 42 Whatever moves on its belly, and whatever moves on all fours, or whatever has many feet, all the creatures that swarm upon the earth, you shall not eat; for they are detestable. NIV 42 You are not to eat any creature that moves about on the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is detestable. NRS 43 You shall not make yourselves detestable with any creature that swarms; you shall not defile yourselves with them, and so become unclean. NIV 43 Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. NRS 44 For I am the Lord your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any swarming creature that moves on the earth. NIV 44 I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves about on the ground. NRS 45 For I am the Lord who brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; you shall be holy, for I am holy. NIV 45 I am the LORD who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy. NRS 46 This is the law pertaining to land animal and bird and every living creature that moves through the waters and every creature that swarms upon the earth, NIV 46 " 'These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves in the water and every creature that moves about on the ground. NRS 47 to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten. NIV 47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.' "
