Leviticus 4

RSV 1 And the LORD said to Moses, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, RSV 2 "Say to the people of Israel, If any one sins unwittingly in any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, and does any one of them, NIV 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'When anyone sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD's commands-- RSV 3 if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then let him offer for the sin which he has committed a young bull without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering. NIV 3 " 'If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the LORD a young bull without defect as a sin offering for the sin he has committed. RSV 4 He shall bring the bull to the door of the tent of meeting before the LORD, and lay his hand on the head of the bull, and kill the bull before the LORD. NIV 4 He is to present the bull at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it before the LORD. RSV 5 And the anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it to the tent of meeting; NIV 5 Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull's blood and carry it into the Tent of Meeting. RSV 6 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle part of the blood seven times before the LORD in front of the veil of the sanctuary. NIV 6 He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle some of it seven times before the LORD, in front of the curtain of the sanctuary. RSV 7 And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the LORD which is in the tent of meeting, and the rest of the blood of the bull he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering which is at the door of the tent of meeting. NIV 7 The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the LORD in the Tent of Meeting. The rest of the bull's blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. RSV 8 And all the fat of the bull of the sin offering he shall take from it, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, NIV 8 He shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering--the fat that covers the inner parts or is connected to them, RSV 9 and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them at the loins, and the appendage of the liver which he shall take away with the kidneys NIV 9 both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the covering of the liver, which he will remove with the kidneys-- RSV 10 (just as these are taken from the ox of the sacrifice of the peace offerings), and the priest shall burn them upon the altar of burnt offering. NIV 10 just as the fat is removed from the ox sacrificed as a fellowship offering. Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering. RSV 11 But the skin of the bull and all its flesh, with its head, its legs, its entrails, and its dung, NIV 11 But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head and legs, the inner parts and offal-- RSV 12 the whole bull he shall carry forth outside the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and shall burn it on a fire of wood; where the ashes are poured out it shall be burned. NIV 12 that is, all the rest of the bull--he must take outside the camp to a place ceremonially clean, where the ashes are thrown, and burn it in a wood fire on the ash heap. RSV 13 "If the whole congregation of Israel commits a sin unwittingly and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they do any one of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done and are guilty; NIV 13 " 'If the whole Israelite community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD's commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, they are guilty. RSV 14 when the sin which they have committed becomes known, the assembly shall offer a young bull for a sin offering and bring it before the tent of meeting; NIV 14 When they become aware of the sin they committed, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the Tent of Meeting. RSV 15 and the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bull before the LORD, and the bull shall be killed before the LORD. NIV 15 The elders of the community are to lay their hands on the bull's head before the LORD, and the bull shall be slaughtered before the LORD. RSV 16 Then the anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull to the tent of meeting, NIV 16 Then the anointed priest is to take some of the bull's blood into the Tent of Meeting. RSV 17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD in front of the veil. NIV 17 He shall dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle it before the LORD seven times in front of the curtain. RSV 18 And he shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar which is in the tent of meeting before the LORD; and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering which is at the door of the tent of meeting. NIV 18 He is to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before the LORD in the Tent of Meeting. The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. RSV 19 And all its fat he shall take from it and burn upon the altar. NIV 19 He shall remove all the fat from it and burn it on the altar, RSV 20 Thus shall he do with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. NIV 20 and do with this bull just as he did with the bull for the sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven. RSV 21 And he shall carry forth the bull outside the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the assembly. NIV 21 Then he shall take the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the community. RSV 22 "When a ruler sins, doing unwittingly any one of all the things which the LORD his God has commanded not to be done, and is guilty, NIV 22 " 'When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the LORD his God, he is guilty. RSV 23 if the sin which he has committed is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish, NIV 23 When he is made aware of the sin he committed, he must bring as his offering a male goat without defect. RSV 24 and shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the LORD; it is a sin offering. NIV 24 He is to lay his hand on the goat's head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the LORD. It is a sin offering. RSV 25 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering. NIV 25 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. RSV 26 And all its fat he shall burn on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings; so the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and he shall be forgiven. NIV 26 He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the man's sin, and he will be forgiven. RSV 27 "If any one of the common people sins unwittingly in doing any one of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, and is guilty, NIV 27 " 'If a member of the community sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the LORD's commands, he is guilty. RSV 28 when the sin which he has committed is made known to him he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed. NIV 28 When he is made aware of the sin he committed, he must bring as his offering for the sin he committed a female goat without defect. RSV 29 And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering. NIV 29 He is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering. RSV 30 And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. NIV 30 Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. RSV 31 And all its fat he shall remove, as the fat is removed from the peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a pleasing odor to the LORD; and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. NIV 31 He shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven. RSV 32 "If he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish, NIV 32 " 'If he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he is to bring a female without defect. RSV 33 and lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering. NIV 33 He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it for a sin offering at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. RSV 34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. NIV 34 Then the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. RSV 35 And all its fat he shall remove as the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar, upon the offerings by fire to the LORD; and the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed, and he shall be forgiven. NIV 35 He shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar on top of the offerings made to the LORD by fire. In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven.
