" NIV 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. ' " NIRV 5 Then Jesus said to them, "Suppose someone has a friend. He goes to him at midnight. He says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread. NIV 5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, NIRV 6 A friend of mine on a journey has come to stay with me. I have nothing for him to eat.' NIV 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' NIRV 7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked. My children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' NIV 7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' NIRV 8 "I tell you, that person will not get up. And he won't give the man bread just because he is his friend. But because the man keeps on asking, he will get up. He will give him as much as he needs. NIV 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. NIRV 9 "So here is what I say to you. Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. NIV 9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. NIRV 10 Everyone who asks will receive. He who searches will find. And the door will be opened to the one who knocks. NIV 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. NIRV 11 "Fathers, suppose your son asks for a fish. Which of you will give him a snake instead? NIV 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? NIRV 12 Or suppose he asks for an egg. Which of you will give him a scorpion? NIV 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? NIRV 13 Even though you are evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father who is in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" NIV 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" NIRV 14 Jesus was driving out a demon. The man who had the demon could not speak. When the demon left, the man began to speak. The crowd was amazed. NIV 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. NIRV 15 But some of them said, "Jesus is driving out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons." NIV 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons." NIRV 16 Others put Jesus to the test by asking for a miraculous sign from heaven. NIV 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. NIRV 17 Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to them, "Any kingdom that fights against itself will be destroyed. A family that is divided against itself will fall. NIV 17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. NIRV 18 If Satan fights against himself, how can his kingdom stand? "I say this because of what you claim. You say I drive out demons by the power of Beelzebub. NIV 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. NIRV 19 Suppose I do drive out demons with Beelzebub's help. With whose help do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. NIV 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. NIRV 20 But suppose I drive out demons with the help of God's powerful finger. Then God's kingdom has come to you. NIV 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. NIRV 21 "When a strong man is completely armed and guards his house, what he owns is safe. NIV 21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. NIRV 22 But when someone stronger attacks, he is overpowered. The attacker takes away the armor the man had trusted in. Then he divides up what he has stolen. NIV 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. NIRV 23 "Anyone who is not with me is against me. Anyone who does not gather sheep with me scatters them. NIV 23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters. NIRV 24 "What happens when an evil spirit comes out of a man? It goes through dry areas looking for a place to rest. But it doesn't find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' NIV 24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' NIRV 25 When it arrives there, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. NIV 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. NIRV 26 Then the evil spirit goes and takes seven other spirits more evil than itself. They go in and live there. That man is worse off than before." NIV 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first." NIRV 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out. She shouted, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." NIV 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." NIRV 28 He replied, "Instead, blessed are those who hear God's word and obey it." NIV 28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." NIRV 29 As the crowds grew larger, Jesus spoke to them. "The people of today are evil," he said. "They ask for a miraculous sign from God. But none will be given except the sign of Jonah. NIV 29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. NIRV 30 He was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign from God to the people of today. NIV 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. NIRV 31 "The Queen of the South will stand up on judgment day with the men now living. And she will prove that they are guilty. She came from very far away to listen to Solomon's wisdom. And now one who is more important than Solomon is here. NIV 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. NIRV 32 "The men of Nineveh will stand up on judgment day with the people now living. And the Ninevites will prove that those people are guilty. The men of Nineveh turned away from their sins when Jonah preached to them. And now one who is more important than Jonah is here. NIV 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. NIRV 33 "No one lights a lamp and hides it. No one puts it under a bowl. Instead, people put a lamp on its stand. Then those who come in can see the light. NIV 33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. NIRV 34 "Your eye is like a lamp for your body. Suppose your eyes are good. Then your whole body also is full of light. But suppose your eyes are bad. Then your body also is full of darkness. NIV 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. NIRV 35 So make sure that the light inside you is not darkness. NIV 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. NIRV 36 "Suppose your whole body is full of light. And suppose no part of it is dark. Then your body will be completely lit up. It will be as when the light of a lamp shines on you." NIV 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you." NIRV 37 Jesus finished speaking. Then a Pharisee invited him to eat with him. So Jesus went in and took his place at the table. NIV 37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. NIRV 38 But the Pharisee noticed that Jesus did not wash before the meal. He was surprised. NIV 38 But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised. NIRV 39 Then the Lord spoke to him. "You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish," he said. "But inside you are full of greed and evil. NIV 39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. NIRV 40 You foolish people! Didn't the one who made the outside make the inside also? NIV 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? NIRV 41 Give to poor people what is inside the dish. Then everything will be clean for you. NIV 41 But give what is inside [the dish] to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. NIRV 42 "How terrible it will be for you Pharisees! You give God a tenth of your garden plants, such as mint and rue. But you have forgotten to be fair and to love God. You should have practiced the last things without failing to do the first. NIV 42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. NIRV 43 "How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the most important seats in the synagogues. You love having people greet you in the market places. NIV 43 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. NIRV 44 "How terrible for you! You are like graves that are not marked. People walk over them without knowing it." NIV 44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it." NIRV 45 An authority on the law spoke to Jesus. He said, "Teacher, when you say things like that, you say bad things about us too." NIV 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also." NIRV 46 Jesus replied, "How terrible for you authorities on the law! You put such heavy loads on people that they can hardly carry them. But you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. NIV 46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. NIRV 47 "How terrible for you! You build tombs for the prophets. It was your people of long ago who killed them. NIV 47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. NIRV 48 So you give witness that you agree with what your people did long ago. They killed the prophets, and now you build the prophets' tombs. NIV 48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. NIRV 49 "So God in his wisdom said, 'I will send prophets and apostles to them. They will kill some. And they will try to hurt others.' NIV 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.' NIRV 50 So the people of today will be punished. They will pay for all the prophets' blood spilled since the world began. NIV 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, NIRV 51 I mean from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the temple. Yes, I tell you, the people of today will be punished for all these things. NIV 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all. NIRV 52 "How terrible for you authorities on the law! You have taken away the key to the door of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered. And you have stood in the way of those who were entering." NIV 52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering." NIRV 53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law strongly opposed him. They threw a lot of questions at him. NIV 53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, NIRV 54 They set traps for him. They wanted to catch him in something he might say. NIV 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.
