Luke 11

RHE 1 And it came to pass that as he was in a certain place praying, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. NIV 1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." RHE 2 And he said to them: When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. NIV 2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: " 'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. RHE 3 Give us this day our daily bread. NIV 3 Give us each day our daily bread. RHE 4 And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation. NIV 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. ' " RHE 5 And he said to them: Which of you shall have a friend and shall go to him at midnight and shall say to him: Friend, lend me three loaves, NIV 5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, RHE 6 Because a friend of mine is come off his journey to me and I have not what to set before him. NIV 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' RHE 7 And he from within should answer and say: Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give thee. NIV 7 "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' RHE 8 Yet if he shall continue knocking, I say to you, although he will not rise and give him because he is his friend; yet, because of his importunity, he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. NIV 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. RHE 9 And I say to you: Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you. NIV 9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. RHE 10 For every one that asketh receiveth: and he that seeketh findeth: and to him that knocketh it shall be opened: NIV 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. RHE 11 And which of you, if he ask his father bread, will he give him a stone? Or a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? NIV 11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? RHE 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he reach him a scorpion? NIV 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? RHE 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to them that ask him? NIV 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" RHE 14 And he was casting out a devil: and the same was dumb. And when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes, were in admiration at it. NIV 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. RHE 15 But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils. NIV 15 But some of them said, "By Beelzebub, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons." RHE 16 And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven. NIV 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. RHE 17 But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation; and house upon house shall fall. NIV 17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. RHE 18 And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because you say that through Beelzebub I cast out devils. NIV 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. RHE 19 Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges. NIV 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. RHE 20 But if I by the finger of God cast out devils, doubtless the kingdom of God is come upon you. NIV 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you. RHE 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things are in peace which he possesseth. NIV 21 "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. RHE 22 But if a stronger than he come upon him and overcome him, he will take away all his armour wherein he trusted and will distribute his spoils. NIV 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up the spoils. RHE 23 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. NIV 23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters. RHE 24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest: and not finding, he saith: I will return into my house whence I came out. NIV 24 "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' RHE 25 And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished. NIV 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. RHE 26 Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself: and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. NIV 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first." RHE 27 And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee and the paps that gave thee suck. NIV 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." RHE 28 But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it. NIV 28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." RHE 29 And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation. It asketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. NIV 29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. RHE 30 For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation. NIV 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. RHE 31 The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold more than Solomon here. NIV 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here. RHE 32 The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it; Because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold more than Jonas here. NIV 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. RHE 33 No man lighteth a candle and putteth it in a hidden place, nor under a bushel: but upon a candlestick, that they that come in may see the light. NIV 33 "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead he puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. RHE 34 The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, thy body also will be darksome. NIV 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. RHE 35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. NIV 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. RHE 36 If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness: the whole shall be lightsome and, as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee. NIV 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you." RHE 37 And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat. NIV 37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. RHE 38 And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner. NIV 38 But the Pharisee, noticing that Jesus did not first wash before the meal, was surprised. RHE 39 And the Lord said to him: Now you, Pharisees, make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter: but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity. NIV 39 Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. RHE 40 Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make also that which is within? NIV 40 You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? RHE 41 But yet that which remaineth, give alms: and behold, all things are clean unto you. NIV 41 But give what is inside [the dish] to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. RHE 42 But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb and pass over judgment and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone. NIV 42 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. RHE 43 Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues and salutations in the marketplace. NIV 43 "Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. RHE 44 Woe to you, because you are as sepulchres that appear not: and men that walk over are not aware. NIV 44 "Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing it." RHE 45 And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him: Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also. NIV 45 One of the experts in the law answered him, "Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also." RHE 46 But he said: Woe to you lawyers also, because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers. NIV 46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. RHE 47 Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them. NIV 47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers who killed them. RHE 48 Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers. For they indeed killed them: and you build their sepulchres. NIV 48 So you testify that you approve of what your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. RHE 49 For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles: and some of them they will kill and persecute. NIV 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.' RHE 50 That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, NIV 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, RHE 51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who was slain between the altar and the temple. Yea I say to you: It shall be required of this generation. NIV 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all. RHE 52 Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered in: and those that were entering in, you have hindered. NIV 52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering." RHE 53 And as he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the lawyers began violently to urge him and to oppress his mouth about many things, NIV 53 When Jesus left there, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, RHE 54 Lying in wait for him and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him. NIV 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.
