Luke 15

CEB 1 All the tax collectors and sinners were gathering around Jesus to listen to him. NIV 1 Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. CEB 2 The Pharisees and legal experts were grumbling, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." NIV 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." CEB 3 Jesus told them this parable: NIV 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: CEB 4 “Suppose someone among you had one hundred sheep and lost one of them. Wouldn't he leave the other ninety-nine in the pasture and search for the lost one until he finds it? NIV 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? CEB 5 And when he finds it, he is thrilled and places it on his shoulders. NIV 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders CEB 6 When he arrives home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Celebrate with me because I've found my lost sheep.' NIV 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' CEB 7 In the same way, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who changes both heart and life than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need to change their hearts and lives. NIV 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. CEB 8 "Or what woman, if she owns ten silver coins and loses one of them, won't light a lamp and sweep the house, searching her home carefully until she finds it? NIV 8 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? CEB 9 When she finds it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Celebrate with me because I've found my lost coin.' NIV 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' CEB 10 In the same way, I tell you, joy breaks out in the presence of God's angels over one sinner who changes both heart and life." NIV 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." CEB 11 Jesus said, “A certain man had two sons. NIV 11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. CEB 12 The younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the inheritance.' Then the father divided his estate between them. NIV 12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. CEB 13 Soon afterward, the younger son gathered everything together and took a trip to a land far away. There, he wasted his wealth through extravagant living. NIV 13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. CEB 14 “When he had used up his resources, a severe food shortage arose in that country and he began to be in need. NIV 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. CEB 15 He hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. NIV 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. CEB 16 He longed to eat his fill from what the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything. NIV 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. CEB 17 When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired hands have more than enough food, but I'm starving to death! NIV 17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! CEB 18 I will get up and go to my father, and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. NIV 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. CEB 19 I no longer deserve to be called your son. Take me on as one of your hired hands." ' NIV 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' CEB 20 So he got up and went to his father. “While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion. His father ran to him, hugged him, and kissed him. NIV 20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. CEB 21 Then his son said, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son.' NIV 21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ' CEB 22 But the father said to his servants, ‘Quickly, bring out the best robe and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet! NIV 22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. CEB 23 Fetch the fattened calf and slaughter it. We must celebrate with feasting NIV 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. CEB 24 because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life! He was lost and is found!' And they began to celebrate. NIV 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. CEB 25 "Now his older son was in the field. Coming in from the field, he approached the house and heard music and dancing. NIV 25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. CEB 26 He called one of the servants and asked what was going on. NIV 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. CEB 27 The servant replied, ‘Your brother has arrived, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he received his son back safe and sound.' NIV 27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' CEB 28 Then the older son was furious and didn't want to enter in, but his father came out and begged him. NIV 28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. CEB 29 He answered his father, ‘Look, I've served you all these years, and I never disobeyed your instruction. Yet you've never given me as much as a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. NIV 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. CEB 30 But when this son of yours returned, after gobbling up your estate on prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.' NIV 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' CEB 31 Then his father said, ‘Son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. NIV 31 " 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. CEB 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive. He was lost and is found.'" NIV 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' "
