Luke 15

CJB 1 The tax-collectors and sinners kept gathering around to hear Yeshua, NIV 1 Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear him. CJB 2 and the P'rushim and Torah-teachers kept grumbling. "This fellow," they said, "welcomes sinners -- he even eats with them!" NIV 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." CJB 3 So he told them this parable: NIV 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: CJB 4 "If one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, doesn't he leave the other ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? NIV 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? CJB 5 When he does find it, he joyfully hoists it onto his shoulders; NIV 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders CJB 6 and when he gets home, he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, `Come, celebrate with me, because I have found my lost sheep!' NIV 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' CJB 7 I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who turns to God from his sins than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need to repent. NIV 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. CJB 8 "Another example: what woman, if she has ten drachmas and loses one of these valuable coins, won't light a lamp, sweep the house and search all over until she finds it? NIV 8 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? CJB 9 And when she does find it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, `Come, celebrate with me, because I have found the drachma I lost.' NIV 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' CJB 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy among God's angels when one sinner repents." NIV 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." CJB 11 Again Yeshua said, "A man had two sons. NIV 11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. CJB 12 The younger of them said to his father, `Father, give me the share of the estate that will be mine.' So the father divided the property between them. NIV 12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. CJB 13 As soon as he could convert his share into cash, the younger son left home and went off to a distant country, where he squandered his money in reckless living. NIV 13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. CJB 14 But after he had spent it all, a severe famine arose throughout that country, and he began to feel the pinch. NIV 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. CJB 15 "So he went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. NIV 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. CJB 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the carob pods the pigs were eating, but no one gave him any. NIV 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. CJB 17 "At last he came to his senses and said, `Any number of my father's hired workers have food to spare; and here I am, starving to death! NIV 17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! CJB 18 I'm going to get up and go back to my father and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you; NIV 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. CJB 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired workers." ' NIV 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' CJB 20 So he got up and started back to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran and threw his arms around him and kissed him warmly. NIV 20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. CJB 21 His son said to him, `Father, I have sinned against Heaven and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son --' NIV 21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ' CJB 22 but his father said to his slaves, `Quick, bring out a robe, the best one, and put it on him; and put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet; NIV 22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. CJB 23 and bring the calf that has been fattened up, and kill it. Let's eat and have a celebration! NIV 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. CJB 24 For this son of mine was dead, but now he's alive again! He was lost, but now he has been found!' And they began celebrating. NIV 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. CJB 25 "Now his older son was in the field. As he came close to the house, he heard music and dancing. NIV 25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. CJB 26 So he called one of the servants and asked, `What's going on?' NIV 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. CJB 27 The servant told him, `Your brother has come back, and your father has slaughtered the calf that was fattened up, because he has gotten him back safe and sound.' NIV 27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' CJB 28 But the older son became angry and refused to go inside. "So his father came out and pleaded with him. NIV 28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. CJB 29 `Look,' the son answered, `I have worked for you all these years, and I have never disobeyed your orders. But you have never even given me a young goat, so that I could celebrate with my friends. NIV 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. CJB 30 Yet this son of yours comes, who squandered your property with pros titutes, and for him you slaughter the fattened calf!' NIV 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' CJB 31 `Son, you are always with me,' said the father, `and everything I have is yours. NIV 31 " 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. CJB 32 We had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead but has come back to life -- he was lost but has been found.'" NIV 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' "
