Luke 15:11-32

ESV 11 And he said, "There was a man who had two sons. NIV 11 Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. ESV 12 And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them. NIV 12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them. ESV 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. NIV 13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. ESV 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. NIV 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. ESV 15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. NIV 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. ESV 16 And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. NIV 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. ESV 17 "But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! NIV 17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! ESV 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. NIV 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. ESV 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants."' NIV 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' ESV 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. NIV 20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. ESV 21 And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' NIV 21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ' ESV 22 But the father said to his servants,'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. NIV 22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. ESV 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. NIV 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. ESV 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to celebrate. NIV 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. ESV 25 "Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. NIV 25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. ESV 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. NIV 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ESV 27 And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.' NIV 27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.' ESV 28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, NIV 28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. ESV 29 but he answered his father, 'Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. NIV 29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. ESV 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!' NIV 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' ESV 31 And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. NIV 31 " 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. ESV 32 It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'" NIV 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' "
