Luke 21

CEB 1 Looking up, Jesus saw rich people throwing their gifts into the collection box for the temple treasury. NIV 1 As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. CEB 2 He also saw a poor widow throw in two small copper coins worth a penny. NIV 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. CEB 3 He said, "I assure you that this poor widow has put in more than them all. NIV 3 "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. CEB 4 All of them are giving out of their spare change. But she from her hopeless poverty has given everything she had to live on." NIV 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." CEB 5 Some people were talking about the temple, how it was decorated with beautiful stones and ornaments dedicated to God. Jesus said, NIV 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, CEB 6 "As for the things you are admiring, the time is coming when not even one stone will be left upon another. All will be demolished." NIV 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down." CEB 7 They asked him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? What sign will show that these things are about to happen?" NIV 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" CEB 8 Jesus said, "Watch out that you aren't deceived. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I'm the one!' and ‘It's time!' Don't follow them. NIV 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. CEB 9 When you hear of wars and rebellions, don't be alarmed. These things must happen first, but the end won't happen immediately." NIV 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." CEB 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Nations and kingdoms will fight against each other. NIV 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. CEB 11 There will be great earthquakes and wide-scale food shortages and epidemics. There will also be terrifying sights and great signs in the sky. NIV 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. CEB 12 But before all this occurs, they will take you into custody and harass you because of your faith. They will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. NIV 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. CEB 13 This will provide you with an opportunity to testify. NIV 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. CEB 14 Make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance. NIV 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. CEB 15 I'll give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to counter or contradict. NIV 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. CEB 16 You will be betrayed by your parents, brothers and sisters, relatives, and friends. They will execute some of you. NIV 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. CEB 17 Everyone will hate you because of my name. NIV 17 All men will hate you because of me. CEB 18 Still, not a hair on your heads will be lost. NIV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. CEB 19 By holding fast, you will gain your lives. NIV 19 By standing firm you will gain life. CEB 20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that its destruction is close at hand. NIV 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. CEB 21 At that time, those in Judea must flee to the mountains, those in the city must escape, and those in the countryside must not enter the city. NIV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. CEB 22 These are the days of punishment, when everything written will find its fulfillment. NIV 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. CEB 23 How terrible it will be at that time for women who are pregnant or for women who are nursing their children. There will be great agony on the earth and angry judgment on this people. NIV 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. CEB 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be plundered by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are concluded. NIV 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. CEB 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On the earth, there will be dismay among nations in their confusion over the roaring of the sea and surging waves. NIV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. CEB 26 The planets and other heavenly bodies will be shaken, causing people to faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world. NIV 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. CEB 27 Then they will see the Human One coming on a cloud with power and great splendor. NIV 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. CEB 28 Now when these things begin to happen, stand up straight and raise your heads, because your redemption is near." NIV 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." CEB 29 Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. NIV 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. CEB 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. NIV 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. CEB 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away. NIV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. CEB 34 "Take care that your hearts aren't dulled by drinking parties, drunkenness, and the anxieties of day-to-day life. Don't let that day fall upon you unexpectedly, NIV 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. CEB 35 like a trap. It will come upon everyone who lives on the face of the whole earth. NIV 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. CEB 36 Stay alert at all times, praying that you are strong enough to escape everything that is about to happen and to stand before the Human One." NIV 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." CEB 37 Every day Jesus was teaching in the temple, but he spent each night on the Mount of Olives. NIV 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, CEB 38 All the people rose early in the morning to hear him in the temple area. NIV 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
