MSG 4 All these others made offerings that they'll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn't afford - she gave her all!" NIV 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." MSG 5 One day people were standing around talking about the Temple, remarking how beautiful it was, the splendor of its stonework and memorial gifts. Jesus said, NIV 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, MSG 6 "All this you're admiring so much - the time is coming when every stone in that building will end up in a heap of rubble." NIV 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down." MSG 7 They asked him, "Teacher, when is this going to happen? What clue will we get that it's about to take place?" NIV 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" MSG 8 He said, "Watch out for the doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, 'I'm the One,' or, 'The end is near.' Don't fall for any of that. NIV 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. MSG 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, keep your head and don't panic. This is routine history and no sign of the end." NIV 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." MSG 10 He went on, "Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. NIV 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. MSG 11 Huge earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. You'll think at times that the very sky is falling. NIV 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. MSG 12 "But before any of this happens, they'll arrest you, hunt you down, and drag you to court and jail. It will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name. NIV 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. MSG 13 You'll end up on the witness stand, called to testify. NIV 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. MSG 14 Make up your mind right now not to worry about it. NIV 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. MSG 15 I'll give you the words and wisdom that will reduce all your accusers to stammers and stutters. NIV 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. MSG 16 "You'll even be turned in by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you will be killed. NIV 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. MSG 17 There's no telling who will hate you because of me. NIV 17 All men will hate you because of me. MSG 18 Even so, every detail of your body and soul - even the hairs of your head! - is in my care; nothing of you will be lost. NIV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. MSG 19 Staying with it - that's what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won't be sorry; you'll be saved. NIV 19 By standing firm you will gain life. MSG 20 "When you see soldiers camped all around Jerusalem, then you'll know that she is about to be devastated. NIV 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. MSG 21 If you're living in Judea at the time, run for the hills. If you're in the city, get out quickly. If you're out in the fields, don't go home to get your coat. NIV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. MSG 22 This is Vengeance Day - everything written about it will come to a head. NIV 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. MSG 23 Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. Incredible misery! Torrential rage! NIV 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. MSG 24 People dropping like flies; people dragged off to prisons; Jerusalem under the boot of barbarians until the nations finish what was given them to do. NIV 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. MSG 25 "It will seem like all hell has broken loose - sun, moon, stars, earth, sea, NIV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. MSG 26 in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be quaking. NIV 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. MSG 27 "And then - then! - they'll see the Son of Man welcomed in grand style - a glorious welcome! NIV 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. MSG 28 When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way!" NIV 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." MSG 29 He told them a story. "Look at a fig tree. Any tree for that matter. NIV 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. MSG 30 When the leaves begin to show, one look tells you that summer is right around the corner. NIV 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. MSG 31 The same here - when you see these things happen, you know God's kingdom is about here. NIV 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. MSG 32 Don't brush this off: I'm not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too - these things will happen. NIV 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. MSG 33 Sky and earth will wear out; my words won't wear out. NIV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. MSG 34 "But be on your guard. Don't let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, NIV 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. MSG 35 for it's going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once. NIV 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. MSG 36 So, whatever you do, don't go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that's coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man." NIV 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." MSG 37 He spent his days in the Temple teaching, but his nights out on the mountain called Olives. NIV 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, MSG 38 All the people were up at the crack of dawn to come to the Temple and listen to him. NIV 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
