Luke 21

NCV 1 As Jesus looked up, he saw some rich people putting their gifts into the Temple money box. NIV 1 As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. NCV 2 Then he saw a poor widow putting two small copper coins into the box. NIV 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. NCV 3 He said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow gave more than all those rich people. NIV 3 "I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. NCV 4 They gave only what they did not need. This woman is very poor, but she gave all she had to live on." NIV 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." NCV 5 Some people were talking about the Temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts offered to God. But Jesus said, NIV 5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, NCV 6 "As for these things you are looking at, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another. Every stone will be thrown down." NIV 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down." NCV 7 They asked Jesus, "Teacher, when will these things happen? What will be the sign that they are about to take place?" NIV 7 "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" NCV 8 Jesus said, "Be careful so you are not fooled. Many people will come in my name, saying, 'I am the One' and, 'The time has come!' But don't follow them. NIV 8 He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them. NCV 9 When you hear about wars and riots, don't be afraid, because these things must happen first, but the end will come later." NIV 9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away." NCV 10 Then he said to them, "Nations will fight against other nations, and kingdoms against other kingdoms. NIV 10 Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. NCV 11 In various places there will be great earthquakes, sicknesses, and a lack of food. Fearful events and great signs will come from heaven. NIV 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. NCV 12 "But before all these things happen, people will arrest you and treat you cruelly. They will judge you in their synagogues and put you in jail and force you to stand before kings and governors, because you follow me. NIV 12 "But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. NCV 13 But this will give you an opportunity to tell about me. NIV 13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. NCV 14 Make up your minds not to worry ahead of time about what you will say. NIV 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. NCV 15 I will give you the wisdom to say things that none of your enemies will be able to stand against or prove wrong. NIV 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. NCV 16 Even your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends will turn against you, and they will kill some of you. NIV 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. NCV 17 All people will hate you because you follow me. NIV 17 All men will hate you because of me. NCV 18 But none of these things can really harm you. NIV 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. NCV 19 By continuing to have faith you will save your lives. NIV 19 By standing firm you will gain life. NCV 20 "When you see armies all around Jerusalem, you will know it will soon be destroyed. NIV 20 "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. NCV 21 At that time, the people in Judea should run away to the mountains. The people in Jerusalem must get out, and those who are near the city should not go in. NIV 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. NCV 22 These are the days of punishment to bring about all that is written in the Scriptures. NIV 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. NCV 23 How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or have nursing babies! Great trouble will come upon this land, and God will be angry with these people. NIV 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. NCV 24 They will be killed by the sword and taken as prisoners to all nations. Jerusalem will be crushed by non-Jewish people until their time is over. NIV 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. NCV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On earth, nations will be afraid and confused because of the roar and fury of the sea. NIV 25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. NCV 26 People will be so afraid they will faint, wondering what is happening to the world, because the powers of the heavens will be shaken. NIV 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. NCV 27 Then people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. NIV 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. NCV 28 When these things begin to happen, look up and hold your heads high, because the time when God will free you is near!" NIV 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." NCV 29 Then Jesus told this story: "Look at the fig tree and all the other trees. NIV 29 He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. NCV 30 When their leaves appear, you know that summer is near. NIV 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. NCV 31 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that God's kingdom is near. NIV 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. NCV 32 "I tell you the truth, all these things will happen while the people of this time are still living. NIV 32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. NCV 33 Earth and sky will be destroyed, but the words I have spoken will never be destroyed. NIV 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. NCV 34 "Be careful not to spend your time feasting, drinking, or worrying about worldly things. If you do, that day might come on you suddenly, NIV 34 "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. NCV 35 like a trap on all people on earth. NIV 35 For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. NCV 36 So be ready all the time. Pray that you will be strong enough to escape all these things that will happen and that you will be able to stand before the Son of Man." NIV 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man." NCV 37 During the day, Jesus taught the people in the Temple, and at night he went out of the city and stayed on the Mount of Olives. NIV 37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, NCV 38 Every morning all the people got up early to go to the Temple to listen to him. NIV 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
