Luke 22

ASV 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, ASV 2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death; for they feared the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. ASV 3 And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. ASV 4 And he went away, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might deliver him unto them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. ASV 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. ASV 6 And he consented, and sought opportunity to deliver him unto them in the absence of the multitude. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. ASV 7 And the day of unleavened bread came, on which the passover must be sacrificed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. ASV 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and make ready for us the passover, that we may eat. NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." ASV 9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we make ready? NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. ASV 10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house whereinto he goeth. NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, ASV 11 And ye shall say unto the master of the house, The Teacher saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' ASV 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." ASV 13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. ASV 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. ASV 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. ASV 16 for I say unto you, I shall not eat it, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." ASV 17 And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. ASV 18 for I say unto you, I shall not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." ASV 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." ASV 20 And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, [even] that which is poured out for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. ASV 21 But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. ASV 22 For the Son of man indeed goeth, as it hath been determined: but woe unto that man through whom he is betrayed! NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." ASV 23 And they began to question among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. ASV 24 And there arose also a contention among them, which of them was accounted to be greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. ASV 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles have lordship over them; and they that have authority over them are called Benefactors. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. ASV 26 But ye [shall] not [be] so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. ASV 27 For which is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am in the midst of you as he that serveth. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. ASV 28 But ye are they that have continued with me in my temptations; NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. ASV 29 and I appoint unto you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed unto me, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, ASV 30 that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and ye shall sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. ASV 31 Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat: NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. ASV 32 but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not; and do thou, when once thou hast turned again, establish thy brethren. NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." ASV 33 And he said unto him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death. NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." ASV 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, until thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." ASV 35 And he said unto them, When I sent you forth without purse, and wallet, and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, Nothing. NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. ASV 36 And he said unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet; and he that hath none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. ASV 37 For I say unto you, that this which is written must be fulfilled in me, And he was reckoned with transgressors: for that which concerneth me hath fulfilment. NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." ASV 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough. NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. ASV 39 And he came out, and went, as his custom was, unto the mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. ASV 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." ASV 41 And he was parted from them about a stone's cast; and he kneeled down and prayed, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, ASV 42 saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." ASV 43 And there appeared unto him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. ASV 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. ASV 45 And when he rose up from his prayer, he came unto the disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow, NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. ASV 46 and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." ASV 47 While he yet spake, behold, a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them; and he drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, ASV 48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" ASV 49 And when they that were about him saw what would follow, they said, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" ASV 50 And a certain one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. ASV 51 But Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye [them] thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. ASV 52 And Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and elders, that were come against him, Are ye come out, as against a robber, with swords and staves? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? ASV 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched not forth your hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." ASV 54 And they seized him, and led him [away], and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed afar off. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. ASV 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and had sat down together, Peter sat in the midst of them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. ASV 56 And a certain maid seeing him as he sat in the light [of the fire], and looking stedfastly upon him, said, This man also was with him. NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." ASV 57 But he denied, saying, Woman, I know him not. NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. ASV 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou also art [one] of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. ASV 59 And after the space of about one hour another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this man also was with him; for he is a Galilaean. NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." ASV 60 But Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. ASV 61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how that he said unto him, Before the cock crow this day thou shalt deny me thrice. NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." ASV 62 And he went out, and wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. ASV 63 And the men that held [Jesus] mocked him, and beat him. ASV 66 And as soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people was gathered together, both chief priests and scribes; and they led him away into their council, saying, NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. ASV 67 If thou art the Christ, tell us. But he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, ASV 68 and if I ask [you], ye will not answer. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. ASV 69 But from henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God. NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." ASV 70 And they all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." ASV 71 And they said, What further need have we of witness? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth. NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
