Luke 22

BBE 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread was near, which is called the Passover. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, BBE 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were looking for a chance to put him to death, but they went in fear of the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. BBE 3 And Satan came into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. BBE 4 And he went away and had a discussion with the chief priests and the rulers, about how he might give him up to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. BBE 5 And they were glad, and undertook to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. BBE 6 And he made an agreement with them to give him up to them, if he got a chance, when the people were not present. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. BBE 7 And the day of unleavened bread came, when the Passover lamb is put to death. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. BBE 8 And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and make the Passover ready for us, so that we may take it. NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." BBE 9 And they said to him, Where are we to get it ready? NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. BBE 10 And he said to them, When you go into the town you will see a man coming to you with a vessel of water; go after him into the house into which he goes. NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, BBE 11 And say to the master of the house, The Master says, Where is the guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples? NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' BBE 12 And he will take you up to a great room with a table and seats: there make ready. NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." BBE 13 And they went, and it was as he had said: and they made the Passover ready. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. BBE 14 And when the time had come, he took his seat, and the Apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. BBE 15 And he said, I have had a great desire to keep this Passover with you before I come to my death; NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. BBE 16 For I say to you, I will not take it till it is made complete in the kingdom of God. NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." BBE 17 And he took a cup and, having given praise, he said, Make division of this among yourselves; NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. BBE 18 For I say to you, I will not take of the fruit of the vine till the kingdom of God has come. NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." BBE 19 And he took bread and, having given praise, he gave it to them when it had been broken, saying, This is my body, which is given for you: do this in memory of me. NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." BBE 20 And in the same way, after the meal, he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new testament, made with my blood which is given for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. BBE 21 But the hand of him who is false to me is with me at the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. BBE 22 For it will be done to the Son of man after the purpose of God, but unhappy is that man by whom he is given up. NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." BBE 23 And they were wondering among themselves which of them it was who would do this thing. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. BBE 24 And there was an argument among them about which of them was the greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. BBE 25 And he said, The kings of the Gentiles are lords over them, and those who have authority are given names of honour. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. BBE 26 But let it not be so with you; but he who is greater, let him become like the younger; and he who is chief, like a servant. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. BBE 27 For which is greater, the guest who is seated at a meal or the servant who is waiting on him? is it not the guest? but I am among you as a servant. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. BBE 28 But you are those who have kept with me through my troubles; NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. BBE 29 And I will give you a kingdom as my Father has given one to me, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, BBE 30 So that you may take food and drink at my table in my kingdom, and be seated like kings, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. BBE 31 Simon, Simon, Satan has made a request to have you, so that he may put you to the test as grain is tested: NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. BBE 32 But I have made prayer for you, that your faith may not go from you: and when you are turned again, make your brothers strong. NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." BBE 33 And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death. NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." BBE 34 And he said, I say to you, Peter, before the cock's second cry today, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." BBE 35 And he said to them, When I sent you out without money or bag or shoes, were you in need of anything? And they said, Nothing. NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. BBE 36 And he said to them, But now, he who has a money-bag, or a bag for food, let him take it: and he who has not, let him give his coat for money and get a sword. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. BBE 37 For I say to you that these words will be put into effect in me, And he was numbered among the evil-doers: for what has been said in the Writings about me has an end. NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." BBE 38 And they said, Lord, here are two swords. And he said, It is enough. NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. BBE 39 And he came out, and went, as his way was, to the Mountain of Olives, and the disciples went with him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. BBE 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, Make a prayer that you may not be put to the test. NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." BBE 41 And he went a little distance away from them and, falling on his knees in prayer, he said, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, BBE 42 Father, if it is your pleasure, take this cup from me: but still, let your pleasure, not mine, be done. NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." BBE 43 And an angel from heaven came to him, to give him strength. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. BBE 44 And being in great trouble of soul, the force of his prayer became stronger, and great drops, like blood, came from him, falling to the earth. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. BBE 45 And, getting up from prayer, he came to the disciples, and saw that they were sleeping for sorrow. NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. BBE 46 And he said, Why are you sleeping? Get up, and give yourselves to prayer, so that you may not be put to the test. NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." BBE 47 And while he was saying these words, there came a band of people, and Judas, one of the twelve, was in front of them, and he came near to Jesus to give him a kiss. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, BBE 48 But Jesus said to him, Judas, will you be false to the Son of man with a kiss? NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" BBE 49 And when those who were with him saw what was coming, they said, Lord, may we not make use of our swords? NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" BBE 50 And one of them gave a blow to the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. BBE 51 But Jesus, answering, said, Put up with this, at least. And touching his ear, he made it well. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. BBE 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and the captains of the Temple and the rulers, who had come against him, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? BBE 53 When I was in the Temple with you every day, your hands were not stretched out against me: but this is your hour, and the authority of the dark power. NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." BBE 54 And they made him a prisoner and took him away to the house of the high priest. But Peter went after them at a distance. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. BBE 55 And a fire was lighted in the middle of the open square, and they were seated together, and Peter was among them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. BBE 56 And a certain woman-servant, seeing him in the light of the fire, and looking at him with attention, said, This man was with him. NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." BBE 57 But he said, Woman, it is not true; I have no knowledge of him. NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. BBE 58 And after a little time, another saw him and said, You are one of them; and he said, Man, I am not. NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. BBE 59 And after about an hour, another man said, with decision, Certainly this man was with him, for he is a Galilaean. NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." BBE 60 And Peter said, Man, I have no knowledge of these things of which you are talking. And straight away, while he was saying these words, there came the cry of a cock. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. BBE 61 And the Lord, turning, gave Peter a look. And the words of the Lord came to Peter's mind, how he had said, This night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will be false to me three times. NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." BBE 62 And he went out, weeping bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. BBE 63 And the men in whose hands Jesus was, made sport of him and gave him blows. NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. BBE 64 And, covering his eyes, they said to him, Are you prophet enough to say who gave you that blow? NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" BBE 65 And they said a number of other evil things against him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. BBE 66 And when it was day, the rulers of the people came together, with the chief priests and the scribes, and they took him before their Sanhedrin, saying, NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. BBE 67 If you are the Christ, say so. But he said, If I say so you will not have belief; NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, BBE 68 And if I put a question to you, you will not give an answer. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. BBE 69 But in the future the Son of man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God. NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." BBE 70 And they all said, Are you then the Son of God? and he said, You say that I am. NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." BBE 71 And they said, What more need have we of witness? we have the very words of his mouth. NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
