Luke 22

CEB 1 The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, CEB 2 The chief priests and the legal experts were looking for a way to kill Jesus, because they were afraid of the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. CEB 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. CEB 4 He went out and discussed with the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard how he could hand Jesus over to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. CEB 5 They were delighted and arranged payment for him. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. CEB 6 He agreed and began looking for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them—a time when the crowds would be absent. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. CEB 8 Jesus sent Peter and John with this task: "Go and prepare for us to eat the Passover meal." NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." CEB 9 They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?" NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. CEB 10 Jesus replied, "When you go into the city, a man carrying a water jar will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters. NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, CEB 11 Say to the owner of the house, ‘The teacher says to you, Where is the guestroom where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples? ' NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' CEB 12 He will show you a large upstairs room, already furnished. Make preparations there." NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." CEB 13 They went and found everything just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. CEB 14 When the time came, Jesus took his place at the table, and the apostles joined him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. CEB 15 He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. CEB 16 I tell you, I won't eat it until it is fulfilled in God's kingdom." NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." CEB 17 After taking a cup and giving thanks, he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. CEB 18 I tell you that from now on I won't drink from the fruit of the vine until God's kingdom has come." NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." CEB 19 After taking the bread and giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." CEB 20 In the same way, he took the cup after the meal and said, “This cup is the new covenant by my blood, which is poured out for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. CEB 21 "But look! My betrayer is with me; his hand is on this table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. CEB 22 The Human One goes just as it has been determined. But how terrible it is for that person who betrays him." NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." CEB 23 They began to argue among themselves about which of them it could possibly be who would do this. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. CEB 24 An argument broke out among the disciples over which one of them should be regarded as the greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. CEB 25 But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles rule over their subjects, and those in authority over them are called ‘friends of the people.' NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. CEB 26 But that's not the way it will be with you. Instead, the greatest among you must become like a person of lower status and the leader like a servant. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. CEB 27 So which one is greater, the one who is seated at the table or the one who serves at the table? Isn't it the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. CEB 28 “You are the ones who have continued with me in my trials. NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. CEB 29 And I confer royal power on you just as my Father granted royal power to me. NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, CEB 30 Thus you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones overseeing the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. CEB 31 "Simon, Simon, look! Satan has asserted the right to sift you all like wheat. NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. CEB 32 However, I have prayed for you that your faith won't fail. When you have returned, strengthen your brothers and sisters." NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." CEB 33 Peter responded, "Lord, I'm ready to go with you, both to prison and to death!" NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." CEB 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster won't crow today before you have denied three times that you know me." NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." CEB 35 Jesus said to them, "When I sent you out without a wallet, bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They said, "Nothing." NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. CEB 36 Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a wallet must take it, and likewise a bag. And those who don't own a sword must sell their clothes and buy one. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. CEB 37 I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in relation to me: And he was counted among criminals. Indeed, what's written about me is nearing completion." NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." CEB 38 They said to him, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He replied, "Enough of that!" NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. CEB 39 Jesus left and made his way to the Mount of Olives, as was his custom, and the disciples followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. CEB 40 When he arrived, he said to them, "Pray that you won't give in to temptation." NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." CEB 41 He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed. NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, CEB 42 He said, "Father, if it's your will, take this cup of suffering away from me. However, not my will but your will must be done." NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." CEB 43 Then a heavenly angel appeared to him and strengthened him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. CEB 44 He was in anguish and prayed even more earnestly. His sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. CEB 45 When he got up from praying, he went to the disciples. He found them asleep, overcome by grief. NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. CEB 46 He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you won't give in to temptation." NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." CEB 47 While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd appeared, and the one called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, CEB 48 Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Human One with a kiss?" NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" CEB 49 When those around him recognized what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we fight with our swords?" NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" CEB 50 One of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. CEB 51 Jesus responded, "Stop! No more of this!" He touched the slave's ear and healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. CEB 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come to get him, "Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me, as though I were a thief? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? CEB 53 Day after day I was with you in the temple, but you didn't arrest me. But this is your time, when darkness rules." NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." CEB 54 After they arrested Jesus, they led him away and brought him to the high priest's house. Peter followed from a distance. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. CEB 55 When they lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. CEB 56 Then a servant woman saw him sitting in the firelight. She stared at him and said, "This man was with him too." NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." CEB 57 But Peter denied it, saying, "Woman, I don't know him!" NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. CEB 58 A little while later, someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I'm not!" NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. CEB 59 An hour or so later, someone else insisted, "This man must have been with him, because he is a Galilean too." NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." CEB 60 Peter responded, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" At that very moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. CEB 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words: "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." CEB 62 And Peter went out and cried uncontrollably. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. CEB 63 The men who were holding Jesus in custody taunted him while they beat him. NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. CEB 64 They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" CEB 65 Insulting him, they said many other horrible things against him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. CEB 66 As morning came, the elders of the people, both chief priests and legal experts, came together, and Jesus was brought before their council. NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. CEB 67 They said, "If you are the Christ, tell us!" He answered, "If I tell you, you won't believe. NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, CEB 68 And if I ask you a question, you won't answer. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. CEB 69 But from now on, the Human Onewill be seated on the right side of the power of God." NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." CEB 70 They all said, "Are you God's Son, then?" He replied, "You say that I am." NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." CEB 71 Then they said, "Why do we need further testimony? We've heard it from his own lips." NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
