Luke 22

HNV 1 Now the feast of matzah drew near, which is called the Pesach. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, HNV 2 The chief Kohanim and the Sofrim sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. HNV 3 Hasatan entered into Yehudah, who was called Ish-K'riot, being numbered with the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. HNV 4 He went away, and talked with the chief Kohanim and captains about how he might deliver him to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. HNV 5 They were glad, and agreed to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. HNV 6 He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. HNV 7 The day of matzah came, on which the Pesach must be sacrificed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. HNV 8 He sent Kefa and Yochanan, saying, "Go and prepare the Pesach for us, that we may eat." NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." HNV 9 They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare?" NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. HNV 10 He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters. NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, HNV 11 Tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Pesach with my talmidim?"' NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' HNV 12 He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there." NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." HNV 13 They went, found things as he had told them, and they prepared the Pesach. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. HNV 14 When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. HNV 15 He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Pesach with you before I suffer, NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. HNV 16 for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." HNV 17 He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, "Take this, and share it among yourselves, NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. HNV 18 for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God comes." NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." HNV 19 He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me." NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." HNV 20 He took the cup in like manner after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, that which is poured out for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. HNV 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. HNV 22 The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!" NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." HNV 23 They began to question among themselves, which of them it was that would do this thing. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. HNV 24 There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. HNV 25 He said to them, "The kings of the Goyim lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.' NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. HNV 26 But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. HNV 27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn't it he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. HNV 28 But you are those who have continued with me in my temptations. NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. HNV 29 I appoint to you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed to me, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, HNV 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Yisra'el." NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. HNV 31 The Lord said, "Shim`on, Shim`on, behold, Hasatan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat, NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. HNV 32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers." NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." HNV 33 He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!" NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." HNV 34 He said, "I tell you, Kefa, the rooster will by no means crow today, before you deny that you know me three times." NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." HNV 35 He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. HNV 36 Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. HNV 37 For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted with the lawless.' For that which concerns me has an end." NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." HNV 38 They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough." NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. HNV 39 He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His talmidim also followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. HNV 40 When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you don't enter into temptation." NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." HNV 41 He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, HNV 42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." HNV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. HNV 44 Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. HNV 45 When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the talmidim, and found them sleeping because of grief, NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. HNV 46 and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation." NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." HNV 47 While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Yehudah, one of the twelve, went in front of them. He came near to Yeshua to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, HNV 48 But Yeshua said to him, "Yehudah, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?" NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" HNV 49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" HNV 50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the Kohen Gadol, and cut off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. HNV 51 But Yeshua answered, "Let me at least do this" -- and he touched his ear, and healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. HNV 52 Yeshua said to the chief Kohanim, captains of the temple, and Zakenim, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? HNV 53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn't stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness." NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." HNV 54 They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the Kohen Gadol's house. But Kefa followed from a distance. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. HNV 55 When they had kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and had sat down together, Kefa sat in the midst of them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. HNV 56 A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him." NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." HNV 57 He denied Yeshua, saying, "Woman, I don't know him." NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. HNV 58 After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them!" But Kefa answered, "Man, I am not!" NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. HNV 59 After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Gelili!" NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." HNV 60 But Kefa said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. HNV 61 The Lord turned, and looked at Kefa. Kefa remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times." NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." HNV 62 He went out, and wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. HNV 63 The men who held Yeshua mocked him and beat him. NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. HNV 64 Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?" NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" HNV 65 They spoke many other things against him, insulting him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. HNV 66 As soon as it was day, the assembly of the Zakenim of the people was gathered together, both chief Kohanim and Sofrim, and they led him away into their council, saying, NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. HNV 67 "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you won't believe, NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, HNV 68 and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. HNV 69 From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." HNV 70 They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say it, because I AM." NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." HNV 71 They said, "Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!" NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
