Luke 22

NCV 1 It was almost time for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover Feast. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, NCV 2 The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to kill Jesus, because they were afraid of the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. NCV 3 Satan entered Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' twelve apostles. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. NCV 4 Judas went to the leading priests and some of the soldiers who guarded the Temple and talked to them about a way to hand Jesus over to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. NCV 5 They were pleased and agreed to give Judas money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. NCV 6 He agreed and watched for the best time to hand Jesus over to them when he was away from the crowd. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. NCV 7 The Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lambs had to be sacrificed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. NCV 8 Jesus said to Peter and John, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat." NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." NCV 9 They asked, "Where do you want us to prepare it?" NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. NCV 10 Jesus said to them, "After you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters, NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, NCV 11 and tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says: Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover meal with my followers?' NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' NCV 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Prepare the Passover meal there." NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." NCV 13 So Peter and John left and found everything as Jesus had said. And they prepared the Passover meal. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. NCV 14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles were sitting at the table. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. NCV 15 He said to them, "I wanted very much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. NCV 16 I will not eat another Passover meal until it is given its true meaning in the kingdom of God." NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." NCV 17 Then Jesus took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this cup and share it among yourselves. NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. NCV 18 I will not drink again from the fruit of the vinen until God's kingdom comes." NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." NCV 19 Then Jesus took some bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to the apostles, saying, "This is my body, which I am giving for you. Do this to remember me." NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." NCV 20 In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and said, "This cup is the new agreement that God makes with his people. This new agreement begins with my blood which is poured out for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. NCV 21 "But one of you will turn against me, and his hand is with mine on the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. NCV 22 What God has planned for the Son of Man will happen, but how terrible it will be for that one who turns against the Son of Man." NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." NCV 23 Then the apostles asked each other which one of them would do that. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. NCV 24 The apostles also began to argue about which one of them was the most important. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. NCV 25 But Jesus said to them, "The kings of the non-Jewish people rule over them, and those who have authority over others like to be called 'friends of the people.' NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. NCV 26 But you must not be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the leader should be like the servant. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. NCV 27 Who is more important: the one sitting at the table or the one serving? You think the one at the table is more important, but I am like a servant among you. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. NCV 28 "You have stayed with me through my struggles. NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. NCV 29 Just as my Father has given me a kingdom, I also give you a kingdom NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, NCV 30 so you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NCV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to test all of you as a farmer sifts his wheat. NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. NCV 32 I have prayed that you will not lose your faith! Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me." NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." NCV 33 But Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and even to die with you!" NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." NCV 34 But Jesus said, "Peter, before the rooster crows this day, you will say three times that you don't know me." NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." NCV 35 Then Jesus said to the apostles, "When I sent you out without a purse, a bag, or sandals, did you need anything?" They said, "No." NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. NCV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse or a bag, carry that with you. If you don't have a sword, sell your coat and buy one. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. NCV 37 The Scripture says, 'He was treated like a criminal,' and I tell you this scripture must have its full meaning. It was written about me, and it is happening now." NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." NCV 38 His followers said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough." NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. NCV 39 Jesus left the city and went to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his followers went with him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. NCV 40 When he reached the place, he said to them, "Pray for strength against temptation." NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." NCV 41 Then Jesus went about a stone's throw away from them. He kneeled down and prayed, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, NCV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take away this cupn of suffering. But do what you want, not what I want." NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." NCV 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him to strengthen him. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. NCV 44 Being full of pain, Jesus prayed even harder. His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. NCV 45 When he finished praying, he went to his followers and found them asleep because of their sadness. NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. NCV 46 Jesus said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray for strength against temptation." NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." NCV 47 While Jesus was speaking, a crowd came up, and Judas, one of the twelve apostles, was leading them. He came close to Jesus so he could kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, NCV 48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you using the kiss to give the Son of Man to his enemies?" NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" NCV 49 When those who were standing around him saw what was happening, they said, "Lord, should we strike them with our swords?" NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" NCV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. NCV 51 Jesus said, "Stop! No more of this." Then he touched the servant's ear and healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. NCV 52 Those who came to arrest Jesus were the leading priests, the soldiers who guarded the Temple, and the older Jewish leaders. Jesus said to them, "You came out here with swords and clubs as though I were a criminal. NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? NCV 53 I was with you every day in the Temple, and you didn't arrest me there. But this is your time -- the time when darkness rules." NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." NCV 54 They arrested Jesus, and led him away, and brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed far behind them. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. NCV 55 After the soldiers started a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat together, Peter sat with them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. NCV 56 A servant girl saw Peter sitting there in the firelight, and looking closely at him, she said, "This man was also with him." NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." NCV 57 But Peter said this was not true; he said, "Woman, I don't know him." NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. NCV 58 A short time later, another person saw Peter and said, "You are also one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. NCV 59 About an hour later, another man insisted, "Certainly this man was with him, because he is from Galilee, too." NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." NCV 60 But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" At once, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. NCV 61 Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered what the Lord had said: "Before the rooster crows this day, you will say three times that you don't know me." NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." NCV 62 Then Peter went outside and cried painfully. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. NCV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began making fun of him and beating him. NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. NCV 64 They blindfolded him and said, "Prove that you are a prophet, and tell us who hit you." NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" NCV 65 They said many cruel things to Jesus. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. NCV 66 When day came, the council of the older leaders of the people, both the leading priests and the teachers of the law, came together and led Jesus to their highest court. NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. NCV 67 They said, "If you are the Christ, tell us." Jesus said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe me. NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, NCV 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. NCV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will sit at the right hand of the powerful God." NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." NCV 70 They all said, "Then are you the Son of God?" Jesus said to them, "You say that I am." NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." NCV 71 They said, "Why do we need witnesses now? We ourselves heard him say this." NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
