Luke 22

RHE 1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the pasch, was at hand. NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, RHE 2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put Jesus to death: but they feared the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. RHE 3 And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve. NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. RHE 4 And he went and discoursed with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might betray him to them. NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. RHE 5 And they were glad and covenanted to give him money. NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. RHE 6 And he promised. And he sought opportunity to betray him in the absence of the multitude. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. RHE 7 And the day of the unleavened bread came, on which it was necessary that the pasch should be killed. NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. RHE 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go, and prepare for us the pasch, that we may eat. NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." RHE 9 But they said: Where wilt thou that we prepare? NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. RHE 10 And he said to them: Behold, as you go into the city, there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water: follow him into the house where he entereth in. NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, RHE 11 And you shall say to the goodman of the house: The master saith to thee: Where is the guest chamber, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples? NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' RHE 12 And he will shew you a large dining room, furnished. And there prepare. NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." RHE 13 And they going, found as he had said to them and made ready the pasch. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. RHE 14 And when the hour was come, he sat down: and the twelve apostles with him. NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. RHE 15 And he said to them: With desire I have desired to eat this pasch with you, before I suffer. NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. RHE 16 For I say to you that from this time I will not eat it, till it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." RHE 17 And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks and said: Take and divide it among you. NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. RHE 18 For I say to you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, till the kingdom of God come. NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." RHE 19 And taking bread, he gave thanks and brake and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a commemoration of me. NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." RHE 20 In like manner, the chalice also, after he had supped, saying: This is the chalice, the new testament in my blood, which shall be shed for you. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. RHE 21 But yet behold: the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. RHE 22 And the Son of man indeed goeth, according to that which is determined: but yet, woe to that man by whom he shall be betrayed. NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." RHE 23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. RHE 24 And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be the greater. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. RHE 25 And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them are called beneficent. NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. RHE 26 But you not so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger: and he that is the leader, as he that serveth. NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. RHE 27 For which is greater, he that sitteth at table or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at table? But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. RHE 28 And you are they who have continued with me in my temptations: NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. RHE 29 And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom; NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, RHE 30 That you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom: and may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. RHE 31 And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. RHE 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren. NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." RHE 33 Who said to him: Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison and to death. NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." RHE 34 And he said: I say to thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, till thou thrice deniest that thou knowest me. And he said to them: NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." RHE 35 When I sent you without purse and scrip and shoes, did you want anything? NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. RHE 36 But they said: Nothing. Then said he unto them: But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a scrip: and he that hath not, let him sell his coat and buy a sword. NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. RHE 37 For I say to you that this that is written must yet be fulfilled in me. And with the wicked was he reckoned. For the things concerning me have an end. NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." RHE 38 But they said: Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said to them: It is enough. NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. RHE 39 And going out, he went, according to his custom, to the Mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him. NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. RHE 40 And when he was come to the place, he said to them: Pray, lest ye enter into temptation. NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." RHE 41 And he was withdrawn away from them a stone’s cast. And kneeling down, he prayed. NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, RHE 42 Saying: Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me: but yet not my will, but thine be done. NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." RHE 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed the longer. NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. RHE 44 And his sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. RHE 45 And when he rose up from prayer and was come to the disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow. NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. RHE 46 And he said to them: Why sleep you? Arise: pray: lest you enter into temptation. NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." RHE 47 As he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus, for to kiss him. NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, RHE 48 And Jesus said to him: Judas, dost thou betray the Son of man with a kiss? NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" RHE 49 And they that were about him, seeing what would follow, said to him: Lord, shall we strike with the sword? NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" RHE 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. RHE 51 But Jesus answering, said: Suffer ye thus far. And when he had touched his ear, he healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. RHE 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and magistrates of the temple and the ancients, that were come unto him: Are ye come out, as it were against a thief, with swords and clubs? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? RHE 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not stretch forth your hands against me: but this is your hour and the power of darkness. NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." RHE 54 And apprehending him, they led him to the high priest’s house. But Peter followed afar off. NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. RHE 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall and were sitting about it, Peter was in the midst of them. NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. RHE 56 Whom when a certain servant maid had seen sitting at the light and had earnestly beheld him, she said: This man also was with him. NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." RHE 57 But he denied him, saying: Woman, I know him not. NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. RHE 58 And after a little while, another seeing him, said: Thou also art one of them. But Peter said: O man, I am not. NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. RHE 59 And after the space, as it were of one hour, another certain man affirmed, saying: Of a truth, this man was also with him: for he is also a Galilean. NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." RHE 60 And Peter said: Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, as he was yet speaking, the cock crew. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. RHE 61 And the Lord turning looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as he had said: Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny thrice. NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." RHE 62 And Peter going out, wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. RHE 63 And the men that held him mocked him and struck him. NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. RHE 64 And they blindfolded him and smote his face. And they asked him saying: Prophesy: Who is it that struck thee? NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" RHE 65 And blaspheming, many other things they said against him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. RHE 66 And as soon as it was day, the ancients of the people and the chief priests and scribes came together. And they brought him into their council saying: If thou be the Christ, tell us. NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. RHE 67 And he saith to them: If I shall tell you, you will not believe me. NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, RHE 68 And if I shall also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. RHE 69 But hereafter the Son of man shall be sitting on the right hand of the power of God. NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." RHE 70 Then said they all: Art thou then the Son of God? Who said: You say that I am. NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." RHE 71 And they said: What need we any further testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth. NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
