Luke 22

YLT 1 And the feast of the unleavened food was coming nigh, that is called Passover, NIV 1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, YLT 2 and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they may take him up, for they were afraid of the people. NIV 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. YLT 3 And the Adversary entered into Judas, who is surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve, NIV 3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. YLT 4 and he, having gone away, spake with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might deliver him up to them, NIV 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. YLT 5 and they rejoiced, and covenanted to give him money, NIV 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money. YLT 6 and he agreed, and was seeking a favourable season to deliver him up to them without tumult. NIV 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. YLT 7 And the day of the unleavened food came, in which it was behoving the passover to be sacrificed, NIV 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. YLT 8 and he sent Peter and John, saying, `Having gone on, prepare to us the passover, that we may eat;' NIV 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." YLT 9 and they said to him, `Where wilt thou that we might prepare?' NIV 9 "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. YLT 10 And he said to them, `Lo, in your entering into the city, there shall meet you a man, bearing a pitcher of water, follow him to the house where he doth go in, NIV 10 He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, YLT 11 and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where the passover with my disciples I may eat? NIV 11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' YLT 12 and he shall show you a large upper room furnished, there make ready;' NIV 12 He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." YLT 13 and they, having gone away, found as he hath said to them, and they made ready the passover. NIV 13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. YLT 14 And when the hour come, he reclined (at meat), and the twelve apostles with him, NIV 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. YLT 15 and he said unto them, `With desire I did desire to eat this passover with you before my suffering, NIV 15 And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. YLT 16 for I say to you, that no more may I eat of it till it may be fulfilled in the reign of God.' NIV 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." YLT 17 And having taken a cup, having given thanks, he said, `Take this and divide to yourselves, NIV 17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. YLT 18 for I say to you that I may not drink of the produce of the vine till the reign of God may come.' NIV 18 For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." YLT 19 And having taken bread, having given thanks, he brake and gave to them, saying, `This is my body, that for you is being given, this do ye -- to remembrance of me.' NIV 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." YLT 20 In like manner, also, the cup after the supping, saying, `This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, that for you is being poured forth. NIV 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. YLT 21 `But, lo, the hand of him delivering me up [is] with me on the table, NIV 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. YLT 22 and indeed the Son of Man doth go according to what hath been determined; but wo to that man through whom he is being delivered up.' NIV 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him." YLT 23 And they began to reason among themselves, who then of them it may be, who is about to do this thing. NIV 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. YLT 24 And there happened also a strife among them -- who of them is accounted to be greater. NIV 24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. YLT 25 And he said to them, `The kings of the nations do exercise lordship over them, and those exercising authority upon them are called benefactors; NIV 25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. YLT 26 but ye [are] not so, but he who is greater among you -- let him be as the younger; and he who is leading, as he who is ministering; NIV 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. YLT 27 for who is greater? he who is reclining (at meat), or he who is ministering? is it not he who is reclining (at meat)? and I -- I am in your midst as he who is ministering. NIV 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. YLT 28 `And ye -- ye are those who have remained with me in my temptations, NIV 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. YLT 29 and I appoint to you, as my Father did appoint to me, a kingdom, NIV 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, YLT 30 that ye may eat and may drink at my table, in my kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.' NIV 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. YLT 31 And the Lord said, `Simon, Simon, lo, the Adversary did ask you for himself to sift as the wheat, NIV 31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. YLT 32 and I besought for thee, that thy faith may not fail; and thou, when thou didst turn, strengthen thy brethren.' NIV 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." YLT 33 And he said to him, `Sir, with thee I am ready both to prison and to death to go;' NIV 33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death." YLT 34 and he said, `I say to thee, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice thou mayest disown knowing me.' NIV 34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me." YLT 35 And he said to them, `When I sent you without bag, and scrip, and sandals, did ye lack anything?' and they said, `Nothing.' NIV 35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered. YLT 36 Then said he to them, `But, now, he who is having a bag, let him take [it] up, and in like manner also a scrip; and he who is not having, let him sell his garment, and buy a sword, NIV 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. YLT 37 for I say to you, that yet this that hath been written it behoveth to be fulfilled in me: And with lawless ones he was reckoned, for also the things concerning me have an end.' NIV 37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment." YLT 38 And they said, `Sir, lo, here [are] two swords;' and he said to them, `It is sufficient.' NIV 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied. YLT 39 And having gone forth, he went on, according to custom, to the mount of the Olives, and his disciples also followed him, NIV 39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. YLT 40 and having come to the place, he said to them, `Pray ye not to enter into temptation.' NIV 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." YLT 41 And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying, NIV 41 He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, YLT 42 saying, `Father, if Thou be counselling to make this cup pass from me --; but, not my will, but Thine be done.' -- NIV 42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." YLT 43 And there appeared to him a messenger from heaven strengthening him; NIV 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. YLT 44 and having been in agony, he was more earnestly praying, and his sweat became, as it were, great drops of blood falling upon the ground. NIV 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. YLT 45 And having risen up from the prayer, having come unto the disciples, he found them sleeping from the sorrow, NIV 45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. YLT 46 and he said to them, `Why do ye sleep? having risen, pray that ye may not enter into temptation.' NIV 46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." YLT 47 And while he is speaking, lo, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them, and he came nigh to Jesus to kiss him, NIV 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, YLT 48 and Jesus said to him, `Judas, with a kiss the Son of Man dost thou deliver up?' NIV 48 but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" YLT 49 And those about him, having seen what was about to be, said to him, `Sir, shall we smite with a sword?' NIV 49 When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?" YLT 50 And a certain one of them smote the servant of the chief priest, and took off his right ear, NIV 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. YLT 51 and Jesus answering said, `Suffer ye thus far,' and having touched his ear, he healed him. NIV 51 But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him. YLT 52 And Jesus said to those having come upon him -- chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and elders -- `As upon a robber have ye come forth, with swords and sticks? NIV 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? YLT 53 while daily I was with you in the temple, ye did stretch forth no hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of the darkness.' NIV 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns." YLT 54 And having taken him, they led and brought him to the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following afar off, NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. YLT 55 and they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them, NIV 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. YLT 56 and a certain maid having seen him sitting at the light, and having earnestly looked at him, she said, `And this one was with him!' NIV 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him." YLT 57 and he disowned him, saying, `Woman, I have not known him.' NIV 57 But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. YLT 58 And after a little, another having seen him, said, `And thou art of them!' and Peter said, `Man, I am not.' NIV 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied. YLT 59 And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, `Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;' NIV 59 About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." YLT 60 and Peter said, `Man, I have not known what thou sayest;' and presently, while he is speaking, a cock crew. NIV 60 Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. YLT 61 And the Lord having turned did look on Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him -- `Before a cock shall crow, thou mayest disown me thrice;' NIV 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." YLT 62 and Peter having gone without, wept bitterly. NIV 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. YLT 63 And the men who were holding Jesus were mocking him, beating [him]; NIV 63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. YLT 64 and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, `Prophesy who he is who smote thee?' NIV 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?" YLT 65 and many other things, speaking evilly, they spake in regard to him. NIV 65 And they said many other insulting things to him. YLT 66 And when it became day there was gathered together the eldership of the people, chief priests also, and scribes, and they led him up to their own sanhedrim, NIV 66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. YLT 67 saying, `If thou be the Christ, tell us.' And he said to them, `If I may tell you, ye will not believe; NIV 67 "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, YLT 68 and if I also question [you], ye will not answer me or send me away; NIV 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. YLT 69 henceforth, there shall be the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God.' NIV 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." YLT 70 And they all said, `Thou, then, art the Son of God?' and he said unto them, `Ye say [it], because I am;' NIV 70 They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am." YLT 71 and they said, `What need yet have we of testimony? for we ourselves did hear [it] from his mouth.' NIV 71 Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
