Luke 24

CSB 1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. CSB 6 "He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, NIV 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: CSB 7 saying, 'The Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day' ?" NIV 7 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " CSB 8 And they remembered His words. NIV 8 Then they remembered his words. CSB 9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. NIV 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. CSB 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. CSB 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. NIV 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. CSB 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened. NIV 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. CSB 13 Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. NIV 16 but they were kept from recognizing him. CSB 17 Then He asked them, "What is this dispute that you're having with each other as you are walking?" And they stopped [walking and looked] discouraged. NIV 17 He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast. CSB 18 The one named Cleopas answered Him, "Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that happened there in these days?" NIV 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, "Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?" CSB 19 "What things?" He asked them. So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people, NIV 19 "What things?" he asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. CSB 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him. NIV 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; CSB 21 But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened. NIV 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. CSB 22 Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb, NIV 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning CSB 23 and when they didn't find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. CSB 25 He said to them, "How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken! NIV 25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! CSB 26 Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?" NIV 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" CSB 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. NIV 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. CSB 28 They came near the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther. NIV 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. CSB 29 But they urged Him: "Stay with us, because it's almost evening, and now the day is almost over." So He went in to stay with them. NIV 29 But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. CSB 30 It was as He reclined at the table with them that He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. NIV 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. CSB 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him, but He disappeared from their sight. NIV 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. CSB 32 So they said to each other, "Weren't our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?" NIV 32 They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" CSB 33 That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together, NIV 33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together CSB 34 who said, "The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!" NIV 34 and saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." CSB 35 Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. NIV 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. CSB 36 And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, "Peace to you!" NIV 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." CSB 37 But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. NIV 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. CSB 38 "Why are you troubled?" He asked them. "And why do doubts arise in your hearts? NIV 38 He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? CSB 39 Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself! Touch Me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have." NIV 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself ! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." CSB 40 Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet. NIV 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. CSB 41 But while they still could not believe because of [their] joy and were amazed, He asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" NIV 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" CSB 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish, NIV 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, CSB 43 and He took it and ate in their presence. NIV 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. CSB 44 Then He told them, "These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you-that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled." NIV 44 He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." CSB 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. NIV 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. CSB 46 He also said to them, "This is what is written: the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, NIV 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, CSB 47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. NIV 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. CSB 48 You are witnesses of these things. NIV 48 You are witnesses of these things. CSB 49 And look, I am sending you what My Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high." NIV 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." CSB 50 Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He blessed them. NIV 50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. CSB 51 And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven. NIV 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. CSB 52 After worshiping Him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. NIV 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. CSB 53 And they were continually in the temple complex blessing God. NIV 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
