Luke 2:1-20

CEB 1 In those days Caesar Augustus declared that everyone throughout the empire should be enrolled in the tax lists. NRS 1 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. CEB 2 This first enrollment occurred when Quirinius governed Syria. NRS 2 This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. CEB 3 Everyone went to their own cities to be enrolled. NRS 3 All went to their own towns to be registered. CEB 4 Since Joseph belonged to David's house and family line, he went up from the city of Nazareth in Galilee to David's city, called Bethlehem, in Judea. NRS 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. CEB 5 He went to be enrolled together with Mary, who was promised to him in marriage and who was pregnant. NRS 5 He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. CEB 6 While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. NRS 6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. CEB 7 She gave birth to her firstborn child, a son, wrapped him snugly, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guestroom. NRS 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. CEB 8 Nearby shepherds were living in the fields, guarding their sheep at night. NRS 8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. CEB 9 The Lord's angel stood before them, the Lord's glory shone around them, and they were terrified. NRS 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. CEB 10 The angel said, "Don't be afraid! Look! I bring good news to you—wonderful, joyous news for all people. NRS 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: CEB 11 Your savior is born today in David's city. He is Christ the Lord. NRS 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. CEB 12 This is a sign for you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped snugly and lying in a manger." NRS 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." CEB 13 Suddenly a great assembly of the heavenly forces was with the angel praising God. They said, NRS 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, CEB 14 "Glory to God in heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors." NRS 14 "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" CEB 15 When the angels returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, "Let's go right now to Bethlehem and see what's happened. Let's confirm what the Lord has revealed to us." NRS 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." CEB 16 They went quickly and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. NRS 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. CEB 17 When they saw this, they reported what they had been told about this child. NRS 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; CEB 18 Everyone who heard it was amazed at what the shepherds told them. NRS 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. CEB 19 Mary committed these things to memory and considered them carefully. NRS 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. CEB 20 The shepherds returned home, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. Everything happened just as they had been told. NRS 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
