Luke 3

CJB 1 In the fifteenth year of Emperor Tiberius' rule; when Pontius Pilate was governor of Y'hudah, Herod ruler of the Galil, his brother Philip ruler of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, NIV 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar--when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene-- CJB 2 with `Anan and Kayafa being the cohanim g'dolim; the word of God came to Yochanan Ben-Z'kharyah in the desert. NIV 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. CJB 3 He went all through the Yarden region proclaiming an immersion involving turning to God from sin in order to be forgiven. NIV 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. CJB 4 It was just as had been written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Yesha`yahu, "The voice of someone crying out: `In the desert prepare the way for ADONAI! Make straight paths for him! NIV 4 As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. CJB 5 Every valley must be filled in, every mountain and hill leveled off; the winding roads must be straightened and the rough ways made smooth. NIV 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. CJB 6 Then all humanity will see God's deliverance.'" NIV 6 And all mankind will see God's salvation.' " CJB 7 Therefore, Yochanan said to the crowds who came out to be immersed by him, "You snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming punishment? NIV 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? CJB 8 If you have really turned from your sins, produce fruit that will prove it! And don't start saying to yourselves, `Avraham is our father'! For I tell you that God can raise up for Avraham sons from these stones! NIV 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. CJB 9 Already the axe is at the root of the trees, ready to strike; every tree that doesn't produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown in the fire!" NIV 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." CJB 10 The crowds asked Yochanan, "So then, what should we do?" NIV 10 "What should we do then?" the crowd asked. CJB 11 He answered, "Whoever has two coats should share with somebody who has none, and whoever has food should do the same." NIV 11 John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." CJB 12 Tax-collectors also came to be immersed; and they asked him, "Rabbi, what should we do?" NIV 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?" CJB 13 "Collect no more than the government assesses," he told them. NIV 13 "Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them. CJB 14 Some soldiers asked him, "What about us? What should we do?" To them he said, "Don't intimidate anyone, don't accuse people falsely, and be satisfied with your pay." NIV 14 Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay." CJB 15 The people were in a state of great expectancy, and everyone was wondering whether perhaps Yochanan himself might be the Messiah; NIV 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. CJB 16 so Yochanan answered them all, "I am immersing you in water, but he who is coming is more powerful than I -- I'm not worthy to untie his sandals! He will immerse you in the Ruach HaKodesh and in fire. NIV 16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. CJB 17 He has with him his winnowing fork to clear out his threshing floor and gather his wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the straw with unquenchable fire!" NIV 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." CJB 18 And with many other warnings besides these he announced the Good News to the people. NIV 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them. CJB 19 But Yochanan also denounced Herod the regional governor for taking as his own wife Herodias, the wife of his brother, and for all the other wicked things Herod had done; NIV 19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, CJB 20 whereupon Herod added this to the rest: he locked up Yochanan in prison. NIV 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. CJB 21 While all the people were being immersed, Yeshua too was immersed. As he was praying, heaven was opened; NIV 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened CJB 22 the Ruach HaKodesh came down on him in physical form like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, whom I love; I am well pleased with you." NIV 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." CJB 23 Yeshua was about thirty years old when he began his public ministry.
