NRS 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; NIV 5 Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. NRS 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.' " NIV 6 And all mankind will see God's salvation.' " NRS 7 John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? NIV 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? NRS 8 Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, "We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. NIV 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. NRS 9 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." NIV 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." NRS 10 And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" NIV 10 "What should we do then?" the crowd asked. NRS 11 In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." NRS 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, NIV 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. NRS 16 John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. NIV 16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
