CSB 1 When He had concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. CSB 2 A centurion's slave, who was highly valued by him, was sick and about to die. NIV 2 There a centurion's servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. CSB 3 When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Him, requesting Him to come and save the life of his slave. NIV 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. CSB 4 When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy for You to grant this, NIV 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, "This man deserves to have you do this, CSB 5 because he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue." NIV 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue." CSB 6 Jesus went with them, and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell Him, "Lord, don't trouble Yourself, since I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. NIV 6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. CSB 7 That is why I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be cured. NIV 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. CSB 8 For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes; and to another, 'Come!' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it." NIV 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." CSB 9 Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following Him, He said, "I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel!" NIV 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." CSB 10 When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. NIV 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well. CSB 11 Soon afterwards He was on His way to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with Him. NIV 11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. CSB 12 Just as He neared the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was also with her. NIV 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out--the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. CSB 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, "Don't cry." NIV 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry." CSB 14 Then He came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And He said, "Young man, I tell you, get up!" NIV 14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" CSB 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. NIV 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. CSB 16 Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us," and "God has visited His people." NIV 16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people." CSB 17 This report about Him went throughout Judea and all the vicinity. NIV 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. CSB 18 Then John's disciples told him about all these things. So John summoned two of his disciples NIV 18 John's disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, CSB 19 and sent them to the Lord, asking, "Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?" NIV 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" CSB 20 When the men reached Him, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to ask You, 'Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?' " NIV 20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?' " CSB 21 At that time Jesus healed many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many blind people. NIV 21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. CSB 22 He replied to them, "Go and report to John the things you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news preached to them. NIV 22 So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. CSB 23 And anyone who is not offended because of Me is blessed." NIV 23 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." CSB 24 After John's messengers left, He began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind? NIV 24 After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? CSB 25 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft robes? Look, those who are splendidly dressed and live in luxury are in royal palaces. NIV 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. CSB 26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet. NIV 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. CSB 27 This is the one it is written about: Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You; he will prepare Your way before You. NIV 27 This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' CSB 28 I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John, but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." NIV 28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." CSB 29 (And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged God's way of righteousness, because they had been baptized with John's baptism. NIV 29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John. CSB 30 But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of God for themselves.) NIV 30 But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.) CSB 31 "To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? NIV 31 "To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? CSB 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other: We played the flute for you, but you didn't dance; we sang a lament, but you didn't weep! NIV 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: " 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.' CSB 33 For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!' NIV 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' CSB 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' NIV 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." ' CSB 35 Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children." NIV 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children." CSB 36 Then one of the Pharisees invited Him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. NIV 36 Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. CSB 37 And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house. She brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil NIV 37 When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, CSB 38 and stood behind Him at His feet, weeping, and began to wash His feet with her tears. She wiped His feet with the hair of her head, kissing them and anointing them with the fragrant oil. NIV 38 and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. CSB 39 When the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, "This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching Him-she's a sinner!" NIV 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is--that she is a sinner." CSB 40 Jesus replied to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Teacher," he said, "say it." NIV 40 Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. CSB 41 "A creditor had two debtors. One owed 500 denarii, and the other 50. NIV 41 "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. CSB 42 Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?" NIV 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?" CSB 43 Simon answered, "I suppose the one he forgave more." "You have judged correctly," He told him. NIV 43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said. CSB 44 Turning to the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she, with her tears, has washed My feet and wiped them with her hair. NIV 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. CSB 45 You gave Me no kiss, but she hasn't stopped kissing My feet since I came in. NIV 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. CSB 46 You didn't anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. NIV 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. CSB 47 Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that's why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little." NIV 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." CSB 48 Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." NIV 48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." CSB 49 Those who were at the table with Him began to say among themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?" NIV 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" CSB 50 And He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace." NIV 50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
