Luke 8

BBE 1 And it came about, after a short time, that he went through town and country giving the good news of the kingdom of God, and with him were the twelve, NIV 1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, BBE 2 And certain women who had been made free from evil spirits and diseases, Mary named Magdalene, from whom seven evil spirits had gone out, NIV 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; BBE 3 And Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's chief house-servant, and Susanna and a number of others, who gave him of their wealth for his needs. NIV 3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. BBE 4 And when a great number of people came together, and men from every town went out to him, he gave them teaching in the form of a story: NIV 4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: BBE 5 A man went out to put in seed, and while he was doing it, some was dropped by the wayside and it was crushed under foot, and was taken by the birds of heaven. NIV 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. BBE 6 And some went on the rock, and when it came up it became dry and dead because it had no water. NIV 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. BBE 7 And some went among thorns, and the thorns came up with it and it had no room for growth. NIV 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. BBE 8 And some falling on good earth, came up and gave fruit a hundred times as much. And with these words he said in a loud voice, He who has ears, let him give ear. NIV 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." BBE 9 And his disciples put questions to him about the point of the story. NIV 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. BBE 10 And he said, To you is given knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to the others, they are given in stories, so that seeing, they may not see, and though they give hearing, the sense will not be clear to them. NIV 10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, " 'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.' BBE 11 Now this is the point of the story: The seed is the word of God. NIV 11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. BBE 12 Those by the side of the road are those who have given hearing; then the Evil One comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not have faith and get salvation. NIV 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. BBE 13 And those on the rock are those who with joy give hearing to the word; but having no root, they have faith for a time, and when the test comes they give up. NIV 13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. BBE 14 And those which went among thorns are those who have given hearing, and go on their way, but they are overcome by cares and wealth and the pleasures of life, and they give no fruit. NIV 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. BBE 15 And those in the good earth are those who, having given ear to the word, keep it with a good and true heart, and in quiet strength give fruit. NIV 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. BBE 16 No man, when the light is lighted, puts a cover over it, or puts it under a bed, but he puts it on its table, so that those who come in may see the light. NIV 16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. BBE 17 For nothing is put out of view which will not be made clear, and nothing is secret of which the knowledge will not come to light. NIV 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. BBE 18 So take care how you give hearing, for to him who has will be given, and from him who has not will be taken even what he seems to have. NIV 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him." BBE 19 And his mother and his brothers came to him, and they were not able to get near him because of the great number of people. NIV 19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. BBE 20 And someone said to him, Your mother and your brothers are outside desiring to see you. NIV 20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." BBE 21 But he said to them in answer, My mother and my brothers are those who have knowledge of the word of God and do it. NIV 21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice." BBE 22 Now it came about on one of those days that he got into a boat with his disciples; and he said to them, Let us go over to the other side of the water: and they put out the boat. NIV 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. BBE 23 But while they were sailing he went to sleep: and a storm of wind came down on the sea, and the boat became full of water and they were in danger. NIV 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. BBE 24 Then they came to him and, awaking him out of his sleep, said, Master, Master, destruction is near. And he, when he was awake, gave orders to the wind and the rolling waves, and the storm came to an end, and all was calm. NIV 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. BBE 25 And he said to them, Where is your faith? And fear and wonder overcame them, and they said to one another, Who then is this, who gives orders even to the winds and the water and they do what he says? NIV 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." BBE 26 And they came to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. NIV 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. BBE 27 And when he had come to the land, there came to him a certain man from the town who had evil spirits; and for a long time he had had no clothing on, and was not living in a house but in the place of the dead. NIV 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. BBE 28 And when he saw Jesus, he gave a loud cry and went down on the earth before him and in a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Do not be cruel to me. NIV 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" BBE 29 For he gave an order to the evil spirit to come out of the man. For frequently it would take a grip of him: and he was kept under control, and prisoned with chains; but parting the chains in two, he would be sent by the driving of the evil spirit into waste places. NIV 29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. BBE 30 And Jesus said to him, What is your name? And he said, Legion; for a number of spirits had gone into him. NIV 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. BBE 31 And they made a request to him that he would not give them an order to go away into the deep. NIV 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. BBE 32 Now there was a great herd of pigs in that place, getting food on the mountain: and the evil spirits made a request to him that he would let them go into the pigs, and he let them. NIV 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. BBE 33 And the evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs: and the herd went rushing down a sharp slope into the water and came to destruction. NIV 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. BBE 34 And when the men who took care of them saw what had come about, they went quickly and gave news of it in the town and the country. NIV 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, BBE 35 And they went out to see what had taken place, and they came to Jesus and saw the man out of whom the evil spirits had gone, seated, clothed and with full use of his senses, at the feet of Jesus; and fear came on them. NIV 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. BBE 36 And those who had seen it gave them an account of how the man who had the evil spirits was made well. NIV 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. BBE 37 And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes made a request to him to go away from them; for they were in great fear: and he got into a boat and went back. NIV 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. BBE 38 But the man from whom the evil spirits had gone out had a great desire to be with him, but he sent him away, saying, NIV 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, BBE 39 Go back to your house and let them have news of all the great things which God has done for you. And he went away, giving word through all the town of the great things which Jesus had done for him. NIV 39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. BBE 40 And when Jesus went back, the people were glad to see him, for they were all waiting for him. NIV 40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. BBE 41 Then there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler in the Synagogue: and he went down at the feet of Jesus, desiring him to come to his house; NIV 41 Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house BBE 42 For he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was near to death. But while he was on his way, the people were pushing to be near him. NIV 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. BBE 43 And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had given all her money to medical men, and not one of them was able to make her well, NIV 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. BBE 44 Came after him and put her hand on the edge of his robe, and straight away the flowing of her blood was stopped. NIV 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. BBE 45 And Jesus said, Who was touching me? And when they all said, It is not I, Peter and those who were with him said, Master, the people are pushing round you on every side. NIV 45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you." BBE 46 But Jesus said, Someone was touching me, for I had the feeling that power had gone out from me. NIV 46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me." BBE 47 And when the woman saw that she was not able to keep it secret, she came, shaking with fear, and falling down before him she made clear before all the people the reason for her touching him, and how she was made well straight away. NIV 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. BBE 48 And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace. NIV 48 Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace." BBE 49 While he was still talking, someone came from the house of the ruler of the Synagogue, saying, Your daughter is dead; do not go on troubling the Master. NIV 49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more." BBE 50 But Jesus at these words said to him, Have no fear, only have faith, and she will be made well. NIV 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed." BBE 51 And when he came to the house he did not let any man go in with him, but only Peter and John and James, and the father of the girl and her mother. NIV 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother. BBE 52 And all the people were weeping and crying for her; but he said, Do not be sad, for she is not dead, but sleeping. NIV 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep." BBE 53 And they were laughing at him, being certain that she was dead. NIV 53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. BBE 54 But he, taking her hand, said to her, My child, get up. NIV 54 But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!" BBE 55 And her spirit came back to her and she got up straight away: and he gave orders that food was to be given to her. NIV 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. BBE 56 And her father and mother were full of wonder, but he gave orders to them to say nothing about it to anyone. NIV 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
