Luke 8

CSB 1 Soon afterwards He was traveling from one town and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with Him, NIV 1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, CSB 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, called Magdalene (seven demons had come out of her); NIV 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; CSB 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions. NIV 3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. CSB 4 As a large crowd was gathering, and people were flocking to Him from every town, He said in a parable: NIV 4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: CSB 5 "A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up. NIV 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. CSB 6 Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprang up, it withered, since it lacked moisture. NIV 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. CSB 7 Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. NIV 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. CSB 8 Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times [what was sown]." As He said this, He called out, "Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!" NIV 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." CSB 9 Then His disciples asked Him, "What does this parable mean?" NIV 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. CSB 10 So He said, "The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. " NIV 10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, " 'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.' CSB 11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. NIV 11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. CSB 12 The seeds along the path are those who have heard. Then the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. NIV 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. CSB 13 And the seeds on the rock are those who, when they hear, welcome the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and depart in a time of testing. NIV 13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. CSB 14 As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit. NIV 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. CSB 15 But the seed in the good ground-these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit. NIV 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. CSB 16 "No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see the light. NIV 16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. CSB 17 For nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing hidden that won't be made known and come to light. NIV 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. CSB 18 Therefore, take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him." NIV 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him." CSB 19 Then His mother and brothers came to Him, but they could not meet with Him because of the crowd. NIV 19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. CSB 20 He was told, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You." NIV 20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." CSB 21 But He replied to them, "My mother and My brothers are those who hear and do the word of God." NIV 21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice." CSB 22 One day He and His disciples got into a boat, and He told them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out, NIV 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. CSB 23 and as they were sailing He fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger. NIV 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. CSB 24 They came and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to die!" Then He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm. NIV 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. CSB 25 He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, "Who can this be? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey Him!" NIV 25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." CSB 26 Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. NIV 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. CSB 27 When He got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met Him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs. NIV 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. CSB 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, You Son of the Most High God? I beg You, don't torment me!" NIV 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!" CSB 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and although he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places. NIV 29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. CSB 30 "What is your name?" Jesus asked him. "Legion," he said-because many demons had entered him. NIV 30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. CSB 31 And they begged Him not to banish them to the abyss. NIV 31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. CSB 32 A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged Him to permit them to enter the pigs, and He gave them permission. NIV 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. CSB 33 The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned. NIV 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. CSB 34 When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside. NIV 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, CSB 35 Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. NIV 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. CSB 36 Meanwhile the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered. NIV 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. CSB 37 Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked Him to leave them, because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, He returned. NIV 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. CSB 38 The man from whom the demons had departed kept begging Him to be with Him. But He sent him away and said, NIV 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, CSB 39 "Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you." And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town all that Jesus had done for him. NIV 39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. CSB 40 When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all expecting Him. NIV 40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. CSB 41 Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus' feet and pleaded with Him to come to his house, NIV 41 Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house CSB 42 because he had an only daughter about 12 years old, and she was at death's door. While He was going, the crowds were nearly crushing Him. NIV 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. CSB 43 A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years, who had spent all she had on doctors yet could not be healed by any, NIV 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. CSB 44 approached from behind and touched the tassel of His robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped. NIV 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. CSB 45 "Who touched Me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are hemming You in and pressing against You." NIV 45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you." CSB 46 "Somebody did touch Me," said Jesus. "I know that power has gone out from Me." NIV 46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me." CSB 47 When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched Him and how she was instantly cured. NIV 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. CSB 48 "Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace." NIV 48 Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace." CSB 49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader's [house], saying, "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the Teacher anymore." NIV 49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more." CSB 50 When Jesus heard it, He answered him, "Don't be afraid. Only believe, and she will be made well." NIV 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed." CSB 51 After He came to the house, He let no one enter with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother. NIV 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother. CSB 52 Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But He said, "Stop crying, for she is not dead but asleep." NIV 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep." CSB 53 They started laughing at Him, because they knew she was dead. NIV 53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. CSB 54 So He took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up!" NIV 54 But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!" CSB 55 Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then He gave orders that she be given something to eat. NIV 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. CSB 56 Her parents were astounded, but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened. NIV 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
